Undertow is a subsurface water flow that is a result of a wave… The issue with the canal since I grew up in a canal town in Rochester and everyone used to jump off the bridges was that the bottom is not a hard surface, its a mushy clay similar to the sticky mud if you ever walked around a construction site after it rains. The result is a sticky clay with a quick sand type effect if you hit the bottom.
