i agree here^.
buying a fast car doesnt make it a good platform. not to mention being able to make a slow car fast on a budget does make it a good platform. making a DSM go fast usually is a compromise of either cheap and unreliable, or expensive and reliable…in the end they can both be just as fast. but buying a fast car doesnt make you sweet. its making a slow car fast that really separate the enthusiast from the ricer

well i took almost 3 seconds on off the time on on my car, and all i’ve gotten is criticism on it, and called a ricer, so apparently thats not true

there is more to shaving seconds. its about making a car a clean presentation of automotive taste. works in progress are understandable. but im a firm beleiver in if your gonna do something do it right. i dont exactly follow my own advise though lol. the trick to it is being able to take the critisism(as i did) and not take it to heart, but take it in a constructive sense and try not to get all defensive about it. in all honesty i really like CB7 accords, and want one as a project car some day. the reason your being called a ricer is cause its in primer…and thats just to stereotypical of ricer…so paint it. lol

Its not buying a slow car that is a better platform. Its buying a car with potential thats a better platform. The 4g63 has an intensively long list of avaliable parts, and has proven itself time and time again to be able to be quite the powerhouse. Along with many of the other parts on DSM’s being able to withstand alot of power. Stock rears, t-cases have no problems holding up to 10second power. So wether you bought it when it was running the stock 15.1’s, or modified to 13’s, its a better platform than a 17.1 second car with little to no potential withought completely changing the vehicle. I.E engine swaps etc.

Its just less impressive i suppose to buy an already ‘quick’ car and make it a little quicker.

Just my opinion. I have nothing against any vehicle, anything can go fast with enough knowledge and money. It just matters what people prefer.

true, but wouldn’t the real ricer thing to do be spray painting it instead of waiting for the $500 for paint to do it right?

^ well yes and no. half of my car is rattlecan, i am sometimes called a ricer because of my bodykit, but im the first to admit i dont like it either lol. it was a quick fix after an accident and cheaper than stock replacement. doesnt really bother me. if your good with a rattlecan, a professional paint job isnt needed unless you want the car to be top notch show quality. ive done alot of spray can paintjobs in my day, its all about the finess lol

I dont think taking an extremely slow car, and making it a little faster with just simple bolt-ons is why anyone might consider a car ‘rice’. Id assume itd be paint/wings/‘cool’ lights, ridiculously queer mods that would lead someone to consider a vehicle rice. And no, im not calling your car rice, (ive never really seen it) and no this isnt intended towards just you.

The real ‘ricer’ thing to do would be rattlecan primer the car, and expect to leave it like that. Or even for a long period of time before painting the vehicle. I don’t know if people realize this, but primer does break down after time, and the vehicle will need to be re-primed.

umm stock honda my drive train is able to hold quite a bit of power. i hear dsm’s sometimes have tranny issues with massive amounts of power. every dsm i looked at before buying my teg either had a rebuilt tranny or a tranny that needs to be replaced.

i agree 110%…now…a honda is also a good platform for the same reasons. they are overengineered to hell from the factory and can handle 10-12psi easy on stock motors with good tuning. to me that is a good platform. the only thing that is needed for drivetrain is a clutch and axles, and maybe LSD. same thing with my car. i have a version of the motor used in the escort cosworths that won the WRC something like 14yrs in a row. a very well designed and proven motor for power. a good platform is something you can make fast on decent budget with good aftermarket support. im not saying a DSM is any less of a platform than a honda/acura or ford or anything for that matter. all im saying is there is more prestige in getting a 17sec car to run 13s than it is to make a 13s car do 12s

Its not the fact of the transmission being weak. Its the fact that these were highly abused cars. 15yrs of kids beating on their parents cool turbocharged car is what most of the problems are. A transmission capable of 700+hp and 9second runs is a STOCK rebuilt transmission, with the addition of small components. Double synchro’s for smoother shifting at higher rpm’s, possibly steel shift rails. The center differential is the weakest link in the DSM transmission. It tends to break apart around 500hp and 1.6x and lower 60ft times from serious stress. But is easily upgraded.

I agree, a properly built honda is a very good platform. Ive seen countless 600+whp honda’s. Thats no joke from such a small displaced motor. Now as far as traction goes, i think thats the largest obstacle for ANY extremely lightweight fwd vehicle.

OEM Spoiler, no money for a paint job, OEM front lip, modest lights, no underglow, neons etc, modest rims with a 3.5" drop, and -1º of static negative camber. i’m guessing a 14.9 or better on drag radials and spray. and a .95g lateral g test. the quarter time will be totally out the window with a brand new setup come spring.
now don’t get me wrong, i’m not denying my car is rice, cuz it is, every modified honda is to a point, but i like to think it’s done mostly tastefully.
things that are definitely rice include the vynil, and the fire extinguisher, and they’ll be gone come spring.

A fire extinguisher is by no means rice. Well, maybe in the windshield, but i always carry one. Doesnt take anything more than a spark to destroy a car in seconds. Primer isnt rice, if its going to be painted. Thats just something being under construction. Im someone who cant afford to finish every project start to finish all at once, so i have no room to critisize anyone for leaving a car unpainted for a few weeks etc. But leaving it in primer isnt a good idea either, it will break down. (primer)

Doing all your own work, and doing it well is more impressive than a sick fast car. Ive assembled my own shortblock from scratch, capable of probly 750whp. Ive built my own exhaust systems from scratch, intercooler piping, rollcage, fuel cell fab, tune my own vehicle etc. IMO Things like that seem to impress me more. Although i cant say a sick fast car isnt impressive =)

^ there you go. now paint it, clean up the mess of wires/lines in your engine bay and i really like it

yea it’s goin in the trunk

speaking of this…duplicolor just recently started offering primer sealer in a rattle can. you should at least seal it if your not getting it painted soon

it’s goin in the garage for the winter, i’ve got some body work to refine, and i’ll probably strip most of the primer off

Paint job and you are all set…Doesnt look like a typical ricer car to me…

My talon runs 11’s all day. Its a daily driver. It was my only car for the summer and never once gave me a problem. I constantly run 30+ psi thru it. Im not saying, “it should be 11’s” or " i beat someone who said they run 12’s by 5 cars so I must be 11’s", I have timeslips and videos to prove it. All Im saying is that my dsm is pretty reliable. If something breaks, its something stupid like the occasional heater hose or spark plug wire. I built it. I race it. I drive it everyday.

The whole “dsm reliability” joke has too many variables. Any 15 year old that is never maintained breaks. Maintenance is key. Just like with ANY vehicle.

Everyone has different goals and preferences for their vehicles and everyone has an opinion. Is that something everyone can agree on?

Word, i like drewj

However, I still think that kit on that civic on the left of the girl dropping her arms = ugly.
