Tach signal slow / Engine dies after 10 seconds

ok well i have a dohc engine in a 89 coupe and i got it running today but whn it starts it takes about 3 seconds for the tach to catch up to the engine rpms
the rpms on the tach slowly go up to 1500 then they stay their for about 5 seconds and slowly start to come back down until the car stalls out

the engine runs ok while the rpms are rising and flalling but i would like to know whats causing the tach to be slow and the engine to die.

this all happens in around 10 seconds

Did you put in a DOHC tach?

yes it is a dohc tach
