Tennessee Firemen watch house burn down over unpaid $75 fee

Obion County, where the Cranicks live, has looked at a variety of ways of paying for fire services. If it put a small tax on electric meters, or simply raised the property tax modestly, it could do away with the fire fee entirely.

I wonder if insurance will cover the fire if they knowingly put the house at risk. I would imagine that if they renewed their policy it would have mentioned the need to carry fire insurance.

I would bet that unless, his house was paid for, the back could even make the payment like they can make insurance payments.

Insurance paid for a truck a kid drove out on a frozen lake in Rochester and had fall through the ice. I’m guessing insurance will still pick up the tab on this house. Insurance doesn’t deny for “stupid”, in fact, it’s kind of what you’re insuring against.

meh…that topic already discussed/over.

haha…travisn

So the left = Locke and the right = Hobbes. Shocking.

shit happens, he forgot to pay his fee, but this still could have been avoided. Add a policy that puts a flat fee for responding to a building thats not up to date on the fee.

forgot to pay your $75 this year? good, that will be $500 + $100 for all your unpaid previous years (up to a limit of say $2500.)

If someone moved in 17 years ago, never paid the fee, and now wants their fire put out, thats $2200 or we let it burn.

^ horrible idea.

So under this policy do I have to have it in cash? Can I write you a check that you do not know if it is good? Do you fight the fire while I am running to the ATM to get money then stop when my back country hick ass gets back without the necessary funds? The policy for showing up to a building that is not up on its fee is already in place IT BURNS.

I agree with this. How many people here commenting have acutally been part of a fire company before? Not have a friend who does it, but actually done it themselves? You would find out that it costs a LOT of money just to keep things going in a day to day operation in a volunteer fire company. If people were given the option to pay only when there was an incident, and especially for some assinine amount as $2200 (for 17yrs? joke) then that’s what everyone would do. And you know what the fire company would have at the end of the year? $10-15k maybe, since a lot of rural places like this don’t get many fires. You know what a fire truck costs? I believe the last one that I saw priced by my department was around $350,000. We run 13 large trucks, 6 smaller, and 4 trailers. That math would not add up, even if they only had 4 trucks.

And as for this situation, if it were in another location, and the house was deemed too unsafe to go in and no one was inside, the fire company would just let it burn and protect exposures, cause it’s not worth the risk of life. Even if someone is trapped, every attempt to save the person will be made, but there comes a point when the call can still be made that it is too risky for fire personnel. Dead firefighters don’t save lives.

I do say it sucks, and that they could add something to either the taxes, or do something like $10k to come start putting your house out, $3500 for each year you are delinquent, and $2000 for each hour beyond the first it takes, plus replacement of any equipment, but then you are basically looking at $15k-30k per call. Not many home owners have that kicking around.

We have state police for all jurisdictions, so why not throw some state firemen into the mix.

State police are capable of being in vehicles and driving all over the place. Firetrucks on the other hand can not just be out driving around waiting for a fire to occur. How many state run fire stations will you put in place? Where is the funding coming from?

i assume you put no thought into this post beyond: “Hey! I think i found a comparison!”

:lolsign:

Basically. My time is precious.

[sarcasm]ya this is a great idea[/sarcasm]

:ham:

[sarcasm] i didnt pay my phone bill this month, but ive paid it for the last 7 years, i should still be able to use my phone and get service [/sarcasm]

and to think of all the time you would have saved if you didn’t post anything at all…

seconds on the minutes compared to what I would have spent if I actually wanted to argue about some guy that forgot to pay a fee and whose house burned down in a whole different state of which the policy relating to where I live are totally different.

only to call 911

This is a crime.

If you are witnessing a person in dire distress and you do not “take reasonable action” to assist, in this case ESPECIALLY since you have a fire truck with you, you are criminally negligent.

Honestly, i read the OP and could not even fathom a rationale person on here agreeing with the firemen…

$75 is irrelevant, even if it was $10,000… you’re a human and you’re witnessing a fellow human in distress and have the resources and training to help out. like a life guard witnessing someone drowning but that person is not a member of the club so they don’t assist… like seriously…

I’m appaulled and have a very difficult time believing this could happen in a civilized society, only in america could this happen and have people defend the firemen.

They should have put the fire out and had the FED print another $75 to bail out the home owner.

What happens if people die in a fire next time… over a $75 bill… i swear.
