I’ve been closely following the design/production of the US version, and its been a big topic on the focus forums…every single person on the forums is blown away/disappointed that the diesel wont be available here…
I would buy it immediately for a DD if they would sell it.
GM is havign similar issues bringing some of their Euro cars here. The falling dollar is to blame. Shame, some good products abound that won’t make it here.
Has ford never head of the phrase “you have to spend money to make money”.
If labor is even cheaper in the US than Britain. Build the plant in the US, re purpose the one in Britain, Build the engines here and sell them to stronger economies. Ford would loose its image of being gas hungry, it would gain way more in compact sales, it would be looked at as a hero for bringing jobs to the US, and diesel is only evil in their eyes I guess. Cause honestly right now, just about everyone I know would buy a diesel car if it meant using less gas. I wanted a turbo diesel even before gas prices went fuckin nuts.
Ford doesn’t have the money to invest now, they are just trying to stay viable right now. They have put together some really good products over the last few years and have some in the pipeline too. THey just need to get through the next year to 18 mos so they can see the return on their investment.
I know what you’re thinking. And the answer is yes, I do have a nickname for my penis. It’s called The Octagon. But I’ve also nicknamed my testes. The left one is James Westfall, and the right one is Dr. Kenneth Noisewater. You ladies play your cards right, you might just get to meet the whole gang.
I’m just talking about Ford’s $25,000 dollar diesel Yaris in the original post. It’s not selling here because fuel mileage isn’t that valuable here, not because Americans can’t figure out that diesels get good gas mileage and don’t smell like trucks.
Because our gas is so cheap, there’s no market here for a $25k subcompact.
How isn’t fuel mileage valuable? How many people are getting rid of their 15mpg cars to pick up something that’s a little better on gas, or buying a second car? I have been considering it too. I would love a diesel, but don’t want to deal with VWs, and since they are the only player, I am SOL. When Honda and Subaru finally bring their diesels here, they will once again show up Ford.
And for the record - all Ford has to do is drop the diesel engine into a focus. I don’t see what’s so expensive about trying it out to see if it sells.
I’m not saying that they’re right or wrong, I’m just saying that their reasoning is that fuel mileage is twice as valuable in Europe so they think there’s a market there.
Anyone in this country who would drop $25k on a diesel subcompact economy car is just bad at math.
2 Door Yaris = $13k
This Ford = $25k
$12k difference. Ford claims their car will get roughly 30mpg better mileage. Lets pretend you drive 30k per year. At 4 bucks a gallon the yaris costs you $3428 per year. At 5 bucks a gallon the Ford costs you $2307 per year. $3428-$2307 = $1101 per year savings. $12k / $1100 = 11 years to break even. :bloated:
I actually do drive 30K miles. And I would rather drive 30K miles in that ford than a yaris. Some people actually spend more money on a car because they like the way it looks.
