If it wasn’t complicated, Whitey wouldn’t be asking for member responce to the propsed Idea. He would just enact it and watch the members pay for the site that they love…
Like Chad said, there are only a handful of members out of 180 regulars responding to this thread. You can sit around and tell people they are obligated all you want, but in the end they will just say fuck it and not come back.

well if the site’s in need of some help and additional people aren’t going to help in the first place, what’s the point of the additional people?
The problem with banners is that you can either charge a) a ridiculous amount or b) charge a small amount and get many irritating banners… but usually people won’t pay for just a banner. They want stats on how much that banner is clicked, who clicks on it most, who BUYS STUFF after they click that banner, etc. That’s a lot of work.
The trick with charging for premium memberships and such, is that you need to have a good balance of “what you get for the $$$”. If you charge $30 a year and all you get different from any other non-paying member is a sticker and an avatar, that sucks IMO (yes, j-body.org did something similar and got people mad). A sticker saying “I paid for a year of PittSpeed and all I got was this lousy sticker” comes to mind.
Whitey, if you need some help w/ coding and such, I’d be more than willing to help you in my free time… I’m up to my ears in website stuff as it is, but I can squeeze some time in for you if you need it.

If you plan on expanding you have to have somthing to support the expansion. You can’t have a “well if you don’t pay goodbye” sort of attitude. It will end in failure.
**EDIT- You can’t have that attitude when you are just starting to get an idea rolling and only have a handful of people responding to this. It would be different of thier were 180 regulars and 160 sending money at this time and point.

Given the figures a few pages back, only 81 people would be needed to throw $20 to cover the server costs. And undoubtably some will throw more.

I was wondering when you would get around to this cause honestly you are gonna have to do it one way or another. You could take offtopic’s model of basic/premium. The thing is to start running it BEFORE you chunk out money for new hosting.
Also armstrong has a killer bandwidth but I’m not sure if you open up ports if it’s feasible. I think it was $99 a month for 10 down, 3M up.

First of all, I believe that Whitey must really love the custom vehicle scene to give his personal time and money to a sight for which the majority of the members he does not know (myself being one of them). The dilemma of how to pay for the website hosting is not one that will be easily answered, as was said above. Whatever is chosen, whether it is to pay $20 or to pay $10 or to pay nothing and have Whitey get fucked, no matter which is chosen it will not be a popular choice with everyone. But, with the way things are in the world, things must be paid for. I think “requiring” an exact amount in donation would be tough, b/c someone that visits the sight once a day may not feel $20 is worth it, but may feel that $10 is worth it. So I think having an exact price may be wrong, but I think that people should feel free to give as much as they choose as long as it is about some relatively low set amount, say $5. No matter how much donations are given, any donations are better than none. Whitey, like I said in another post I’m a member of a sight that is in my signature that has a donation system that seems to work pretty well, and the sight is quite a bit larger than pittspeed. I would love to discuss this with you and possibly throw out some ideas so that I could be of some help. If you are interested in discussing, please PM me or hit me on instant messanger.
I would have no problem donating to use the site. I’m here browsing everyday. It’s one of my main sources of entertainment while at work and often times is the savior of my sanity. (or the cause of it) The contest whitey held awhile back with the questions and challenges was worth the $20 alone. That was an excellent idea in itself. (I never did get my t-shirt though… oh well). Props to whitey for the site. It’s a notch above the top one in my opinion. With added features I am sure it will be outta site!
As for the donation system possibilities I am also very familiar with how blazinlow.com is setup. It seems to work superbly. (if thats a word). Maybe it can be elaborated upon to a teir system… such as the highest teir gets full access to everything with hosting possibly? Then lower teirs get no access to hosting, no videos, etc. Just throwin out some ideas but when it comes down to it whatever whitey decides and however much it’ll cost is what I’ll be doin. Can’t go through a day without my pittspeed!
