Hey so I talked my girl into taking a joy ride to the Catskills (since gas is cheap), we’re going to check out a section of road called the Hawks Nest. It’s NY 97 along the Delaware River (NY/PA border) and heads north from Port Jervis, NY (dump). Wikipedia says the highway has a 55 actual limit and a suggested limit of 25, so that sounds fun. Was wondering if anybody has been out that way before? Any good eating out that way??
Roads got lots of twisties and the like… cool views, supposed to be a popular destination for riders throughout the summer. Oh, and of course there is a decent hawk population, hence the name. Well I’ll definitely be bringing my DSLR and tripod along for the ride hopefully I get some good pictures. Plan on seeing the US’s oldest wire suspension bridge, and possibly NY’s highest falls as well if everything goes smooth (it’s not my GF is still asleep).
Should be a fun road trip for the day, if anyone else has some good driving roads to post up/share I would encourage that. I know of a few more when I sort them out on a map sometime I’ll definitely post em up.
There are many good road around our area, you don’t have to go that far if you don’t want to; There are some info in the moto section or you can search a bit.
Yeah, shorter section than I expected, but definitely fun and scenic. I know there’s closer roads but I’ve never done anything in the catskill’s aside from passing through so it was nice to drive around the town’s and we actual found a pretty good restaurant near the Hawk’s nest.
Ended up taking a long loop home and hitting up rt 23a near saugerties, got to see some cool falls, and though a little more traffic, and a lot narrower it was a fun drive through there. Will definitely check the moto section for more twisties around the area, had a lot of fun today and really got to see how it handles (good, but not good enough!)
I took a bunch of pics and a couple videos, but without an in car mount the videos might be a loss, will have to see
nice cruise sounds awesome i was seriously trying to plan a ride to take the girl on tmrw and stumbled on this :ponder, just woundering how long of a round trip it was for ya?
With lunch and a long route back it was near 10 hours, but you could easily make it round trip in 7 or 8 with lunch and stops. We took 209 instead of the thruway both there and back and like I said, we hit Saugerties and the falls on 23a on the way back as well which added a good chunk of time.
If you’re looking for something shorter, I’d say cruising down that direction (23a) would be a fun scenic cruise, or like others recommended check out the moto section.
I know the road well and have driven it many times. My sales territory spans 9 counties so I’m always on the lookout for those twisties that get your heart pumping. Unfortunately I’m always in my company car (Hyundai Accent) and not my Evo.
Not the best video but a good look at the most challenging/fun section of the road. We hit it 3 more times that day, northbound twice, and southbound twice.
If you can use the whole road you can fly through it NB, Southbound is a little more fun I thought, heavier on the brakes, definitely a bit tighter, really get to pull some g’s. The video of the trip back SB was zoomed in a bit by mistake, so it’s ultra shaky and makes me want to vomit, I may get around to uploading it anyways.
I was on my winter meat still, so hopefully this Summer I will make it back with the Star Specs and a stiffer setup for a little white knuckle action. Still getting to know the car and find the limits, but definitely plenty of road out there to shake it down on.
Past these twisties were some longer straighter sections that you can open up on, they have good visibility ahead for oncoming traffic/law and virtually no shoulders or turnarounds for cops (saw no po9 on RT97 all day).
