i thought this was funny even though it really dont make sense
Q: How do you close applications when multitasking?
A: (Scott Forstall) You don’t have to. The user just uses things and doesn’t ever have to worry about it.
A: (Steve Jobs) It’s like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager… they blew it. Users shouldn’t ever have to think about it.
although funny and very witty cant you get a stylus for iphone/ipad and android does not come with a task manager its something you have to download soo… i dont get it…
That’s what I don’t really get. If the applications are running (multitasking), then wouldn’t you just keep opening applications? Wouldn’t there be a need for some sort of closing on the applications?
And You’re right, the Droid (and possibly other android phones) do not come with a Task Killer by default.
The apps go into a sleep mode with limited funtionality, according to Engadget. Only certain things like audio playing, voip, messaging, gps awareness, notifications will function.
It is a nice concept because it helps with battery life. Droid owners know that having too many apps open in background will kill performance and battery life. I think Apple was trying to avoid that scenario.
edit: From Engadget:
The system actually runs the services apps need in the background – the apps don’t need to do them individually, so it’s not a “true” multitasking system, but it seems plenty effective. There are seven services: background audio, which allows you to use the standard pop-over iPod controls, Voice over IP, which can receive calls in the background, location services for GPS and social networking (there’s an indicator if any service is tracking you), updated push notifications with local notifications, task completion so you can finish things like uploads in the background, and fast app switching, which lets apps sleep and resume instantly. Notably missing? Anything for managing a conversation, like IM or Twitter, which is a big omission. Win some, lose some, we suppose.
No multitasking on my 3G is a crushing blow. I hate forced obsolescence. My current iphone works just fine and if JB will do all the things the new 4.0 will do, but SJ&Co feel it’s time for an upgrade? I’ll be taking a serious look at the competition when I decide it’s time to upgrade. Fuck you Apple.
Yes, the 3G works perfectly fine. Why should I have to nuke my phone every two years if it isn’t broken?
Also, they are upgrading the 3G iphone, just not giving it a full upgrade. They are still selling the device in their stores, why would they stop supporting the product?
What gets me is the planned obsolescence, all for a dumb software update. FWIR, the hardware is capable of receiving the full upgrade.
for one you should have figured that it had a high possibility that it was going to happen cause guess what happened last year with mms and the first iphone…the same exact thing. just cause it is hardware capable dont mean apple will support it, again going back to mms and the first iphone it is hardware capable but they dont support it. in both cases it is probably due to battery life
I think multitasking on the 3g would push the performance below what Apple considers acceptable. Just because hackers are willing to JB and carefully manage what they have open doesn’t mean Apple can release that to the masses. They’re the ones who have to field the support from a largely uneducated user base who will do nothing but cry and complain that multitasking “doesn’t work” because they can’t run every app that Apple allows to multitask on their 3g at once.
Im happy i got the 3GS so i can use the new OS, I could of got the 3G instead but decided if I’m signing a 2yr contract, i want the best phone i can get.
If the phone was 4 or 5 years old, I’d say yeah it’s about time to ditch it and upgrade. Apple releases a new iPhone every year since 2007, the 3G and 3GS are less than a year apart and aren’t too much different as far as hardware is concerned. The fact that I have to go to my boss and ask for a new iPhone 5 months after I got the 3G, so I can do things that should have probably been included in the phone in the first place is ridiculous. They did the same thing with their 10.6 release.
I am happy with my 3G and waited on the 3GS becuase the 4th Gen one had to come out with a lot better screen/processor/memory to handle new features and keep up with the android phones.
Its def work every penny for it tho. I rely so heavy on my phone for work and stuff.
