THE **iPhone** Thread (GPS, JailBreak, Apps, Etc)

One thing I DO like about the iPhone 5 is the multiple microphones. That means noise reduction and cancellation over calls (my N9 has had this for years now) and really makes a quality difference. You have to disable it at a concert or loud event (live band for example) if you want the other party to hear anything other than your voice.

Not leaving AT&T so the Razr stuff is out. I’ve got a couple hours in now playing on my brother in law’s S3 and as an iOS veteran I can tell you the level of polish simply isn’t there, but it’s close enough now that I’m willing to deal with it for a larger screen.

As for the Nokia… Windows phone, nuff said. You have fun with that steaming pile of shit OS.

But do you go around touching other phones or shady looking devices with your phone? If not, then you’re fine. This stuff only works when you’re right on top of it, not even from a guy standing next to you like Bluetooth.

Try it. Smoothest, fastest OS ever on a phone I’ve ever used. And that’s coming from a guy who HATED the decision to drop MeeGo by Nokia for Windows.

I haven’t played with an S3. Frankly I still refuse to own a phone with a manufacturer skin on it. I think that pure Jelly Bean would run circles around whatever Samsung and Moto are doing.

+1 on the Windows phone crap. I HATE that tile interface.

As soon as the videos from Blackhat/defcon on Charlies talk get posted I will repost here he attempted to do this(try to get phones close enough on elevators and other places) it was rather entertaining.

I’m picturing any busy bar where my phone is in my pocket and people are constantly bumping into each other. How long does a NFC hack take? If it’s just a bump I could see it being easy. If some stranger has to hold a scanner against my leg for several seconds I’d probably notice that no matter how drunk, and wouldn’t allow it unless said stranger was really hot and my wife wasn’t there.

2-fold issue.

1, I tend to put my phone down on surfaces and cannot have it constantly in my pocket. However, it would be easy to bump me in the pocket in a crowded bar. EDIT: I posted this before I even saw JayS said the EXACT same thing /EDIT If pick-pockets can still steal wallets, then someone will surely find a way to get close enough to phones which are out-of-pocket and lost more often. If people can still get away with putting card readers into ATM slots, then they will get a device on or near an NFC credit card reader. I don’t trust gas stations attendants to be attentive enough to notice any wrong-doing.

2, I don’t trust any app to securely store the credit card data itself on the device. I don’t care what the encyption algorithm is, I won’t do it. Apps fuck up, encryption algorithms get cracked.

The way I look at it, you pay your cell bill no matter what. There is no cheap cell plans if you had a phone off or on contract. If I had a iPhone that was off contract and my bill was less, then I would consider the increased cost.

Gazelle. iPhone 4 ATT 32GB Perfect condition. $235 and they are sending me a box. Valid for 30 days too so suggest doing it before it goes down.

sounds like i need to start buying up the stock on craigslist. although now that the phone is announced, I can imagine the offers will begin to go down.

That is why I locked mine in this morning on there. Haha. Anyone see what the providers are offering for data?

If you are unlimited currently, they honoring it still? I may drop ATT to go to Sprint for unlimited data if so.

Disappointed in the number of improvements over the 4S, I was really hoping for something Earth-shattering to help motivate Android phone manufacturers to meet. Instead we get a 4SS…

The build quality and smoothness of the OS are certainly top-notch though.

All you NFC worry-worts are forgetting you can turn it off just like Bluetooth.

I’m on an unsubsidized plan with T-Mobile because I don’t buy phones though them. No contract term either. Saves me almost $30/month over the normal plan and I’m not stuck with some carrier locked and branded hardware. Even though I do have to pony up the full price of the phone, I’m coming out ahead based on the time I keep my phones.

It’s possible that other carriers offer this option as well but I’ve never looked into it.

Ya. I wanted to see something ground breaking but what? Cell phones have turned to be at the hold of providers, kinda like how TV and internet technology was before we had 50MB links to your house. The quality of the phone is still there and simple things that go into the design that are huge to some people, for me its that you can still use a 4" phone with one hand. The LTE is a must now for high speed data and now, the only modifications that are gonna be improved are in software and how you interact with your phone and the world around you. From an engineering standpoint, the iPhone is pretty impressive. The chipset they use has been rumored for a while and having the A6 and the Qualcomm multi band chip in there is pretty unique to phones. I would have liked to see a bit more battery life but over all, I am impressed and ready to update.

NFC was cool but it still isn’t ready yet. In that aspect, Apple may be behind but when they do include it in their device, it will be done right and easy to use IMO so the general person can use it. Explain it to the majority of iPhone users and they wont’ care.

Interesting. I never seen anything with Contract/NonContract pricing for phone plans so I never thought of it. In that case, you are taking a loss buying a subsidized phone.

Did anyone else notice they moved the head phone connector? I am interested to try the new ear buds as well

:bigclap:
Is there anything in this announcement that Android doesn’t already have? I’m still looking.

Yeah it’s not like they make commercials advertizing it since they obviously make more money if you buy the phone from them, lol.

Here’s a hardware comparison Engadget just made:

* They left out the wireless charging and optical image stabilization on the Nokia

But regardless of hardware, what Apple does have going for it is that the device is so damn pervasive in EVERYTHING nowadays. Everything is designed to work on Apple devices first (or so it seems.) It’s this fact alone that makes me still consider buying one in the back of my mind.

If only they would have done something new & exciting with the hardware. :meh:

That’s the thing, I don’t know what I expected. But they usually have SOMETHING new…

I do like the multiple microphones for noise cancelling. Otherwise, I’m not that impressed by this phone. Not that it isn’t a great phone, but nothing makes me want to buy this over an Android phone of my choosing.

Pretty stoked better processor, longer battery, LTE

Still hate every Android phone I have ever had because of random crashes/freezes/etc maybe Windows phones will be better?

As far as calling/texting/emailing I haven’t found a better performing phone(size/weight/performance)

I assume NFC would be part of the google passport thing? Technology really isn’t in play everywhere figured apple would be ahead of the curve with it.

Does anyone know if the Verizon version with LTE will be able to do voice and data simultaneously or is it still impossible?

Yes. LTE is a data service and is how the data gets sent over the air to your phone, not voice technically. If you have LTE service, your data rides that and your phone call stream typically traverses your normal 2G/3G cell networks. Providers have ways for voice over LTE networks which essentially turns it into a VOIP call in the back bone but I am pretty sure most CDMA providers only send data over LTE. If your phone has HD audio support and “wideband audio” then typically you are using Voice over LTE and can use both. If you only have a 3G signal for Verizon/Sprint then you still wont be able to access data when calling.

ATT’s comparison when 3G was out is that the calls went over 2G methods and data was 3G. If you only had a 2G signal and on a call, you were SOL.

Either way, yes.

lol i just got the offer of 275on gazelle. mines never seen not having a screen protector or a case on it
