THE **iPhone** Thread (GPS, JailBreak, Apps, Etc)

Ok, thanks. So ‘yes’ but only if you have an LTE signal, just as GSM needs a 3G signal.

Josh, your comparison chart doesn’t indicate how much cooler owning it will make me, as a function of time, starting at one week before release date.

big let down

s3 beats it in every category imo, better battery, better screen, widgets, end user adjustability and more features

im sure all the hipsters will claim apple is superior, but in reality this is a 4s with .25" larger screen and lte… such a let down

It’s a half inch bigger screen. But honestly the iPhone is just easy to use. A majority of cell phone users probably never even use half of the features offered, nor do they honestly care. I’ve had an iPhone since the original and I don’t plan on switching to any other phone anytime soon. Like to me I don’t want a phone as big as some offered, regardless of how “superior” it may be. iPhone works for me just great.

Not sure if anyone looked on Apple.com, but you can pre-order starting this Friday the 14th with an in-store release date of the 21st…

I will be ordering a black 16gb on Friday morning and then promptly selling my iPhone 4. I was able to sell my previous 2 iPhones for around $200 each time I upgraded.

lol.

The comments on this post on Engadget about why the iphone doesn’t have NFC or wireless charging are awesome: Apple's Phil Schiller explains new 'Lightning' port, doesn't think much of NFC and wireless charging

“Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated,”

Really is this guy that much of a moron!

Plug charger into wall. Put phone on pad - Oh god, I’m so CONFUSED

I don’t know what happened. I tried to plug the charging pad into the wall and then put my phone on top of it but I got lost along the way. Now I’m addicted to crystal meth and don’t even have outlets to charge my phone. I live in a box under the golden gate bridge. The locals call me the methed-out Mike. I never should have tried using technology so obviously beyond my understanding.

^^ haha

???

Its showing range with thumb based on screen size

do people really hold the phone like that? Seems kinda irrelevant. I use mine like so:

Because its a known fact that every human thumb is exactly the same size…

No way!!!

Ever try watching a movie on a 3.5" screen?

All of your pocket bumping NFC worries are silly. NFC doesn’t work unless the phone is unlocked… Plus usually you have to accept whatever “bump” or NFC trigger you get. So unless you keep unlocked phones in your pocket all the time and constantly click the “accept” button while bumping into others…

No, I also never tried watching it on a 4.8" screen…

not really?

I have a kindle fire and a nexus 7? lol

That is not the case.

The nice thing about Android is you get choices. It seems no one likes choices though…

I cant get mine to work with the screen off… I have tried… A lot!

It depends on the phone/settings but yea most phones turn it off while locked.

The defcon 20 videos are not up yet but if someone wants to be a nerd here is the PDF

Boring stuff(depending on audience) explaining NFC protocol in the beginning but attack stuff towards the end.

“Nexus S - Android 2.3.3
The first device we reviewed was a Nexus S running Android 2.3.3. As of now, there is
no supported way to update a Nexus S with AT&T baseband to Android 4. This device’s
support of NFC is pretty basic. Out of the box, NFC is enabled but doesn’t do a whole
lot. The device will process NFC data presented to it anytime the screen is on (even if the device is locked).”

“Nokia N9 - MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan PR1.3
The Nokia N9 is a phone running the MeeGo operating system. Out of the box it does
not have NFC enabled. Once enabled, It will process NFC data anytime the screen is
on. If the device is locked, it will process low level NFC data, but handles high level
data differently. None of the attacks outlined later work if the N9 has the screen locked.”

“Galaxy Nexus - Android 4.0.1
The Galaxy Nexus is an Android phone running Ice Cream Sandwich. It still has some
of the same features as the Nexus S, but ICS introduced Android Beam, which greatly
increases the attack surface visible through NFC. Out of the box, the device has NFC
enabled. It will process NFC data any time the screen is on and the device is unlocked.”

Any type of technology is going to be hacked sooner or later. For the small amount I use NFC, I disable it. I have purchased breakfast with my phone, and used bump. I still think all-in-all NFC payments are more secure than carrying a wallet. Likelyhood of your wallet stolen > Someone hacking your NFC payment.

I like NFC

I also have a RFID blocking wallet

The thing is NFC is still in the very early in the adoption process so the security risk is also very low.
