THE **iPhone** Thread (GPS, JailBreak, Apps, Etc)

Anyone tried the VOIP app Fring?

Ya. I use it with VoipBuster for free calls over WiFi. Its really nice.

going out today to get mine.

Congrats. Welcome to our world

i’ve had the iPod touch for a while actually, my contract just ended with ATT, so i decided to renew, sell the iPod, and get the iPhone instead

Ya. Ipod touch got me hooked. Decided to drop Verizon, sell the touch, and get the iPhone and love it.

how much is the 3g phone by itself? Can I just pop the card from my 1st gen and be good to go? Or does it need the 3G plan to use 3G service?

I’d like to get one but don’t want to renew my contract or pay extra (the 1st gen plan is cheaper/more inclusive)

$499 for the 16gb (for sure) and 299 for the 8GB(I think). You will need to upgrade your plan to the 3G iPhone plan tho since you will use 3G.

I had a new 3G phone but when I got the iPhone they gave me the new SIM that came with it to use so I am not sure if you can use your old one in it. Looks the same to me.

ok… so how the eff do i get the program to send multiple texts and fwd texts???

i personally dont want to fuck anything up on mine

its only 199 for the 3G 8GB, and 299 for the 16GB

is there any way to use my music as ringtones without jailbreaking it?? any apps out there?

I think so, but jailbreaking is so worth it  dooooo it

I don’t think that you can without a special program (Which costs money AFAIR)

iPhone Ringtone Maker is what I use. Open a file, select the part you want to use, and it exports it to iTunes. No jailbreak needed.

You need to jailbreak it but there is a few on there that can accomplish this.

stupid question, how is 3G service in the Buffalo area? What kind of speeds do you normally get with it? Do you ever get dropped down to edge?

What areas seem to be “trouble areas”? I think I’m going to upgrade on lunch today

thanks
steve

its fine i never go into edge

I rarely go to Buffalo.

3g is great in Amherst\Williamsville. Cruising around the river in Tonawanda, not so great. The east river it drops down to Edge a lot.

Sitting at my desk here in Amherst I have great 3g coverage, but about once a week it will drop down to edge for a minute or two just to fuck with the poorly shielded speakers on my desk. I have no idea why. After about a minute it will jump back on 3 with 5 bars and be fine the rest of the day/week.

Just ran the speed test over at testmyiphone.com and got:
1.95Mbps (1953Kbps / 238 kB/s)
Transferred 1536 KB in 6.4 seconds.

Turned off 3g, ran the test again and got:
.23 Mbps (226 Kbps / 28 kB/s)
Transferred 256 KB in 9.3 seconds.

So yeah, 3g is way faster.

I live in the city and get 3G all over downtown and most of the concentrated areas. Southtowns down the 400 or out towards depew I kick over to edge. Also some parts of NT/NF area I go to edge too.

ATT has a coverage map with 3G so you can see where you go.

I have run network testing and get about 120KBps on 3G downloading which is pretty decent for a cell phone.

Ya 3G in comparison to EDGE is like night and day.

thanks

If I ebay the old one, It should pay for the new phone and then some. I wonder why their still going for so much $$$ (is it becuase the new ones cant be unlocked?)

For anyone who upgraded, did you have to sync it with itunes first? Or can you just pop the sim in and not have to worry about it?
