THE **iPhone** Thread (GPS, JailBreak, Apps, Etc)

a couple rubber bands, put it on vibrate and wait for your mom to call?

I’m making the jump over to an iPhone. I have had Sprint for 14 years now and since I can’t carry the SERO plan over to a phone like the Palm Pre and they are trying to phase everyone off that plan, I’ll be proactive.

It arrives at the AT&T store on Wednesday. I’ll get 24% off through my wife’s work.

Plus I’ll be getting a 13" MacBook Aluminum this week too. So I guess you can say I partially switched.

Do I really have to go through all 58 pages of this thread now?

Oh yea, I’ll have a 1st Gen iPod Touch 16GB for sale and a new 8GB iPod Touch for sale too if anyone wants. PM me if interested.

id say just ask a few questions. no need to real it all. which phone will u be getting? the 8gig 3g or the 16/32 3gs

That GPS app is pretty damn nice. It’s way better than xGPS, but to xGPS’s credit they did come out with theirs back on the 2.x firmware when GPS wasn’t supported at all.

The install took forever on my 3g though. Probably close to 15 minutes just sitting there at “uncompressing archive”. Understandable for a 1.7 GB ipa though.

I’m getting the 16GB 3Gs

I guess I would ask if someone could give me cliffnotes on:

  1. What does jailbreaking it really do? And which one is the best to use?
  2. Does Jailbreak void warranty, is it able to be put back to original config?
3)What are the best sites for apps, hacks, and info?
  1. im bad at explaining what it does but use 0.8 redsn0w, and u will need to DL a copy of the 3.0 3gs firmware
2)does not void warrenty, yes just reinstall the firmware with itunes that easy
3)go to modmyi for info i read alot there
  1. Jailbreaking allows you to do all the things the Mighty Steve doesn’t want you doing on his hardware. Things like installing unsupported apps (like a video recorder), installing pirated apps, tethering etc. Use redsn0w to jailbreak, it’s pretty idiot proof. www.modmyi.com is a good place to check out.
  2. You can always restore your original firmware so I don’t know how they could tell it was jailbroken. If things go really wrong you can put the phone in DFU mode and restore from there. I’ve never had to do this.
  3. www.modmyi.com for info. http://appulo.us/appdb/ for apps. Once you have Cydia on your phone (part of the jailbreak), open it, go to Manage, Sources, Edit, Add, “http://cydia.hackulo.us/”. You can then install a package called “Installous” and download IPA’s (the installers for app store apps) straight to your phone and install them.

EDIT: Do a search for “iPhone SSH” on google. Really easy, and very handy for backing up IPA’s you download right to the phone, or transferring IPA’s you download to your PC and want to move to your phone.

Jay, good info. Gives me something to do today

I’m picking it up tomorrow and will keep it stock until when I go home after work and will start modding it.

yeah it recalculates in an instant if you miss a turn, its not constantly telling me that im going the wrong direction when im not like xGPS. over all its much smoother than xGPS

I see lots of people bitching about not enough POI’s, especially gas stations, but that’s not a big deal since when I’m traveling I don’t wait until I’m on fumes and then hope the GPS can find me a gas station within a mile. I’m running over to Pizza Junction on lunch so we’ll see what route it suggests and how well it handles me going the way I want regardless of what it says.

I’m yet to find a way to review the route though, and that’s a major drawback. With the Garmins I’ve used you can use the arrows to go through the route step by step and see what turns it has you making ahead of time. Have you found a way to do that with this?

to view route tap the screen to get to main mene then select route and it gives you a list of ways to view the route

I wonder how this will compare to Tom Tom’s upcoming app, cheaper you think? The screenshots look nice, but I’m leery of spending $80 on this with Tomtom’s app coming.

I’m curious about how tomtom will price their app.

Just spotted this in a review “you cannot play music while navigating” sooo, that’s a huge skip. I use my iphone as my only music source in the car.

I think it’s a bug. You can play music but when the first voice prompt comes on it pauses the song then doesn’t start it back up. I bet there will be a bugfix soon.

I wouldn’t pay $80 for it. I’ve seen the Garmin Nuvi 200 for close to that and a dedicated GPS is always going to be better than cramming one in a phone. I’ve been driving 16+ years without a GPS though so I wouldn’t spend $100 on a Nuvi either. I got this app :snky: jailbreak style, but I’d say I’d probably pay about $20 for it.

Anyway, back to the review.
I had to go from John Muir in Amherst (millersport/n.forest) to Pizza Junction in NT. It suggested going up millersport to the 290. Nope, I take Audubon > 990 > 290 > Twin City Hwy > Erie Ave. Their suggestion probably only would have cost me a couple minutes though (so far). When I got past the APD headquarters it stopped suggesting I turn around and was sending me up Audubon. However, when I got to the 990 it wanted me to go up Dodge. This would have sent me through super busy N French/Sweethome and NFB. Major time would have been lost. Once I was on the 990 it finally agreed with me and suggested the 290 to 425.

One other little hiccup in the trip though. When you’re going up 425 toward Erie Ave you exit well before Erie Ave (clearly marked) and drive along Division for about a 1/4 mile. The GPS didn’t have me take this exit, instead going about 200 feet past Erie Ave and back tracking on Division. Retarded, but wouldn’t have cost me more than a minute or two.

All in all the GPS would have got me there, but as is the case with most GPS units, the tricky part is in the routing engine. In the US anyway the routing engine is why Garmin is the GPS to have.

its probably going to be about the same price as tom tom though this is just pure speculation by me as i have no idea.

i am sure it will get better as updates come but for now while tom tom is not out IMO its the best GPS solution for the iphone

A bug, ok, I can accept that. I don’t see the need for a dedicated GPS for how infrequently I need it, but it’s nice to have. I really like the google maps traffic feature, comes in real handy when I’m in the NYC area (3-5) times a year

No GPS can defeat local knowledge, pretty much most of the time when I need directions around here, my route is better. But out of town it’s another story of course, only the locals know better. Like when I was in Clearwater this March and used the GPS to go someplace, redlight after redlight and I KNOW there HAS to be a better way, I just don’t know what it is.

yeah i dont think it does a good job at finding the best route
