This isnt just about weight, its about making it easy to work on as well.
I realy dont think this would be any less safe than having no bumper support and the stock core supports. That upper part pretty much just holds the headlights and hood latch.
i agree i dont think it will make much of a difference. at 5 mph or less the bumper it self will just get fucked up, anything over that, other shit is getting cocked whether or not you have done this or your just running with out a bumper support. At least this way if you rear end some one, you dont have a rad support and all other assorted metal to crush. so it might actually be beneficial in a low speed accident.
I say go for it. I hated how the core sapport wasnt removable like my Jetta’s it makes it night and day to work on when you can remove the front clip. ask any audi driver. and i think if its tubed well enough it can be just as safe.
Yeah, I haven’t had a crash bar in like a year, this is just removing my upper core support (which is basically tin foil) my lower radiator support (which is strong, but so low it won’t matter in an accident), and about 6" of my frame rails (which again, won’t matter too much in an accident).
And as Dan said, it’s not for weight, I won’t save much more than 20 pounds or so, it’s for the ability to work on the entire front end even easier than it is now. I am looking, and I think I can leave the headlights mounted if I cut about 4" less than Brian did, and then fab up a small mount for the side of the headlight.
It’s a street car, but with that said, I only put 1000 miles on it this year. They were 1000 tough as fuck miles though
