Those of you that have moved away and moved back??

Who of you have moved away from Buffalo and decided to come back? I have a ton of friends down here(Florida), well more of acquaintances I guess. However only one of them is one I grew up with also my roomate and the only one I fully trust enough to watch my things. I’m not home long enough to need a place of my own as I travel quite a bit as of now. So i’m considering moving back to Buffalo as my base or then again if I found a job paying anywhere near what I make now I would consider living in NY again.

Opinions?

first thinks first, what salary range are you looking for, and what do you do?

I miss Buffalo, I’d move back if I could get a job.

i give you people that stay in buff ALOT of credit

is there any reason to stay there outside of friends/family? (which is a legit reason)

nightlife seems dull, weather sucks, job market for the MOST part doesn’t look great (excluding spot professions)

Right now I am a Special Assignment Manager (in english i’m a floating DM/recruiter/trainer/manager I basically do whatever is needed in the areas of our company that are hurting)for a authorized wireless retailer). The lowest I would be willing to drop to would be the 50-60k range, however the pay cut will be made up in the drop of living expenses.

I have quite a few years of sales and management experience(for my age btw i’m 23). I’m extremely good at what I do as far as being a good judge of character which has helped extensively in the recruiting aspect. Our numbers prove that I am a great motivator. I’ve always been able to adapt to whatever has been thrown at me which was why this position was created specifically for me. However as with any job, I have always trained a replacement in case I decided to leave.

its unfair for me to say i hate it after all its done for me. But, I cant stay here personally.

Also I have been trying to do the 50/50 thing. The reason I left was because of the cold, however after being here for the weekend(sorry I didn’t call alot of people my phone was always dead) Being with my family kind of out weighs the cold.

Born and raised here, graduated then moved to Detroit. Stayed there a year, hated the place, then found a new job back in Buffalo. Been back 2.5 years now and so glad I made the move.

I loved Buff.

Grew up around NYC, went to buff for school. Lived there for a couple years.

Moved back to NYC.

Miss Buffalo for a lot of things, but you can go so much further if you move to a real city…

BTW I obviously already know of the typical job boards. However if anyone knows of anything I would appreciate the heads up.

i’m in the city till december 14th as of now that’s my date for completion of everything that needs to be done here. Let me know if you get bored I wouldn’t mind meeting up with anyone.

been home for about half a year…was away for about a year

money is there to be made anywhere outside of buffalo, but our cost of living is super low compared to most…anywhere…

family and friends brought me back, but i still miss the beach like crazy

i make a good living here and im sure with more experience i can make much more

in my position, i was willing to sacrifice a higher salary for a higher comfort of living (friends, family, etc)

that’s my whole thing sure I love the beach, sure I love having a condo right on the water…then again I also love having my family and friends around.

i gave up renting a house right on the water for a mortgage and utilities for less than my prior monthly rent

right now i’m in Elmsford on Tarrytown, takes me about 30 minutes with light traffic to get into manhattan.

It all depends on what you value the most.

At the end of the day I realized that there are a lot of things that are better than money. Sure you have to have some enough to get by and have some fun, but anything more than that is really not “needed” for me.

Things people mention that important to consider;

Weather- Unless you have a job where you have to work outside, who cares? Change of seasons is cool. In August I can’t wait for it to cool down, in November/December I can’t wait for it to snow, in March I am looking forward to getting my car back on the road, etc.

Cost of living-not really an issue unless you live in a big city where things are rediculously expensive.

Nothing to do: Sounds to me like that person is the problem, not the city. Give me a 12 pack and a few friends I haven’t seen in a while and I’m entertained.

Family & Friends: If the are here, just another positive. Untill you move away, you don’t realize how many people you actually know in a particular place. Usually it’s more than you think.

Knowing your surroundings: Another pretty important thing. You know not to go to Schmidts for audi service, but you know to go to Mufflerman for a cheap exhaust fix. You know your dentist, the restaurants, the places that have good pizza. etc. There is a lot of value in the trial and error you’ve gone through in the last X years.

Just my .02 (and yes I Moved away for 3 years)

X…

Thanks for all the input.

I agree on many things that people have listed, the weather well to be honest after being in it again the snow was kind of fun. The cold, I went and played Frolf (frisbee golf)in Chestnut ridge fell down half a ravine and had the time of my life. The people, I have 90% of my family in Buffalo and tons of friends.

Bottom line is it comes down to my job, if I can find a similar income that i’m making now or slightly less I would be willing to move back.

:word: to Xander.

I moved back to Buffalo. Twice. Once from NJ and most recently from Charlotte. Buffalo has so much to offer if you know where to look.

Employment is a HUGE factor though. Jobs can be scarce in most fields.

:word::word::word:  Well said man

I love B-Lo and really dont ever see myself ever leaving. Family is here and too many close friends that I care about. However, I still love to travel and see new places and do new things. Thats why its totally sweet to have friends all over, you get to experience the best of what different places have to offer with said friends, it doesnt get much better than that.

I just had the fucking raddest weekend hanging out with Howie in NYC, also planning trips to Seattle, Dallas, and possibly Phoenix next year all to hang with good friends and check out what each city has to offer. It more than satisfies any urge i may get to move away. Im grounded where I am, but I make the most of my opportunities to travel and kick it with homies all over so that I dont start to second guess and wonder if another place would be better for me. Just my 2 pennies as well.
