TimeWarner vs. Verizon FIOS - School me, please

I currently have Time Warner (T-W) with digital cable (no HD, no DVR), telephone and internet. I hear that I can save a little money and switch to Verizon (VZW), and get better EVERYTHING. Is this true?

I really have no complaints about T-W, so I don’t want to leave them only to find out I was getting something from them that I took for granted, and VZW can’t offer or charges extra for.

I don’t have HD or a DVR from T-W, but I do have TiVo (Series 2 SD). I don’t want to lose the use of my TiVo, but it won’t do HD, so if HD is on my wish-list for the next year or so, which is better, T-W or VZW? Does either offer any freebies, like HD included in their package, or HD with DVR included?

Do they both have the SAME channel lineup? Would I lose any channels from T-W Digital Cable? How does the HD channel lineup compare? Is HD just included these days, or is it additional? For some reason I feel like it’s just part of digital cable, but since I don’t have an HDTV, I have no idea!

Stupid questions, I’m sure, but I don’t feel like making a spread sheet to compare the channel lineups and everything.

TW is shit, almost anything is better ,if u can get verizon TV go for it.

I’m pretty happy with time warner. They have had a fiber network for years, they just don’t make a big deal about it.

I have 10mbps internet with the basic HD digital cable package, with basic cable installed in two other rooms.

Total bill is 79 bucks per month.

Time warner is still definitely running on copper not fiber. Their backbones and internals may be fiber but if you follow their wires on the road they are copper. There are no splice boxes or repeaters that are very obvious in a fiber setup.

Also Time warner as well as direct TV compress the digital signals from the broadcasters. This places less strain on their networks bandwidth. FIOS can handle the full load so it is true digital TV.

True but not entirely true. It’s called HFC (hybrid fiber coax).

Inside the headend everything is fiber (obviously). It runs fiber from the headend out to the regional headends, from there it runs fiber on the lines to the optical nodes, then from the nodes it runs coax down to the house. The majority of the lines are indeed fiber, just not from the optical node to the house which is where the consumer can see it, so the average consumer just assumes the coax runs the show.

As far as compression on the digital video, I left before I got too deep into that but I was told from all the engineers I worked with that it was not compressed, that we just took what we got and distributed it out but I can’t say for sure because I never worked on it directly. (Was going to be a key part of switched digital but then I hit the road to VA).

If I had the option I’d go for FiOS simply because you can get speeds up to 50down/20up and that is some nice speed but is quite pricey compared to some deals you can get with TWC. Also the amount of HD channels > TWC and SD is so boring now.

i got FIOS, and getin the TV in october…are all those HD channels free??

^^ Probably not free, typically from what I see (TW/Dish/etc) charge around $10/monthly access for HD channels, which if you have a nice tv it is so worth it.

Fios TV is $47 for 200 channels & 60 HD -or- $57 for 200+ & 100 including an extra ~13 sports networked channels.

Plus box lease. $20 for media center DVR (free 12 months); $15 for HD DVR; $10 for HD STB ($4 off for 12 months); $6 for SD STB.

Plus w/e premiums you want. IIRC it is ~$40 for 71 prem channels (HBOs, Cin, TMC, Stars, Flix, etc); they do break them down from there also.

The boxes seem to have some decent features to them, although they have their drawbacks & bugs, as with all providers.

That doesn’t include any internet or phone service. I did their online price quote, and it not only would NOT SAVE me any money, it would cost another 20-50 bucks more per month. I’ll expect them to call me sometime and work out a deal. I won’t fall for their “free for the first 12 months” crap, because that only helps them APPEAR competitive.

Also, the internet packages offer 20 down / 5 up as the main standard. I don’t think I’d consider spending more for the 20/20 or 50/20. I’m not running a web server or anything!

Which brings up an interesting point. It’s FIBER, why limit bandwidth (other than as a tool to change prices)?

Actually, judging by your OP I am guessing it is safe to assume that you’re not running an HDTV…

In which case YOUR monthly cost would be $53.98 before taxes / fees / surcharges. That is the 200 all digital channels & 6X HD channels.

If you’re not taking advantage of HD services now, you prolly have no need to go to FIOS TV to be honest.

I looked into it yesterday (because of this thread) and switching to FIOS TV (bundled with my pre-existing phone & internet service) will save me ~$68 / mo versus what I carry with DISH Network now.

I am by no means a Verizon humper. I switched to FIOS internet because it blows TWs RR service out of the water in terms of reliability, prices, and speed.

I’m switching to FIOS TV because of ~4 months of problems with DISH and because it is substantially cheaper. Also consider that we barely use all of the DISH content we have anyhow, so we’re effectively losing ~9 channels & a few sirius channels for the ~40% price break.
