tire question

ok my girfriend’s sister’s boyfriend (follow me so far???) took her to get tires for her car. he told her winter tires are fine all year round and will wear ok. i cant even find a treadware rating on them. so she has these 4 winter tires now, how much mileage can you expect to get out of them? it better be a lot cuz she’s stuck with them now…

and i couldnt go cuz im a workin fool

all depends on the type of tire. some will wear a whole hell of a lot faster than others.

a lot of winter tires are soft and loud as hell. I’d never expect them to last long, theres more to them than just tread pattern

I’d say around half the treadwear of a regular all season, assuming she doesn’t corner hard. This is based on Dunlop Winter Sport M2 and M3 tires.

I’ve had Blizzaks… they were knobby and were as soft as DR’s. They wore pretty quick.

snow tires will not last long if driven on in the summer time it is not rec because they are so soft that they almost melt on hot pavement

if they are a private line they will tend to last a little longer because they are hard but if they are michelin’s, goodyear’s, dunlop’s, ect they wont last as long because they are typically softer

WTF kind of tire shop recommends winter tires for year round duty? I would post the name of the shop so noone else goes there.

seriously, worst advice evar.

Agreed it’s bad advice because you’ll wear them out faster, but as far as safety is concerned (bearing in mine that it’s female driver/customer), clearly it’s safer to run winter treads in the summer, than summer treads in the winter.

female has nothing to do with it. Winter tires are made to be used in the winter, summer tires are made to used in the summer. if you have either of these two extreme examples of tires, you need to use them correctly. If you cheap out (like me) and use all seasons, then guess what, you can use them all year.

Yeah, but so what if they wear out a little faster? Are they really going to be dangerous in the summer? If she asked for a snow tire, the store sold her exactly what she wanted, how is that bad?

a tire shop should not just sell whatever the customer wants but what will be safe. I would guess the tire shop should have said to get a good set of all seasons or a set of winters for the sinter and a different set of tires for the summer. :dunno:

Instead of buying two sets of tires that will last her 3-4 years depending on driving style, she bought new tires that she will have to go out and replace within a year??

Smart move.

well she didnt pick them out. she has told me she knows nothing about this sort of stuff and was told that her sisters boyfriend would take care of it for her since i was at work and couldnt help her out. so she asked him what tires he picked out for her and he said oh these will be fine, they’e 3 or 4 dollars cheaper than the regular tires. so she said ok if you say they’ll be ok. when she came by work later that day and showed me her new tires, thats when i told her the bad news…

ah ha, edit my orignal post…that reads kinda of wrong. she didnt ask for any tires specifically, she let her sisters boyfriend pick them out for her. the shop didnt tell her to get 4 winter tires, the sisters boyfriend decided the tires that were 3 or 4 dollars cheaper would be sufficient. only later to find out he is an idiot and told the tire shop to put 4 winter tires on her car…

That guy deserves several kicks to the balls for being that stupid.

i would agree. not much she can do now other than just save up for another set. it just sucks cuz it took her forever to save up for this set cuz she only can work about 12 - 15 hours a week with school

Why doesn’t she get the $49 special at Pep Boys or something? Just get something cheap until winter and then she can use those snow tires when it starts to come down.

by the time she has the money for them it will be snowing hahaha

Just a thought. I think that dumbass boyfriend or whatever should buy them for her.
