“Numerous reports have racer Kevin Ward, Jr. killed in altercation with Tony Stewart at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in New York that ended with Stewart running over the driver. Ward, Jr. was “dead on arrival” at a local hospital according to the local sheriff.”
The video is posted in the link somewhere, I believe.
It looks like Stewart went to spray dirt and Ward was too close. There’s going to be a lot of debate on this.
WATKINS GLEN, NY - NASCAR Sprint Cup star Tony Stewart was involved in a crash late Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park near Rochester, N.Y., that resulted in the death of a 20 year old dirt track racer.
According to a report from the Ontario County Sheriff’s office, Stewart and the other driver, identified as Kevin Ward Jr., collided during a Empire Super Sprints race at the half mike dirt oval.
An amateur video showed Ward getting out of his wrecked car and walking down the dimly lit track to confront Stewart.
Stewart came around the track and struck the other driver
I agree based on what I saw in the video, definitely hear him goose the throttle.
Yellow flag was out, “racing” was stopped, I’m sure Tony has gotten out of his car plenty of times in the same situation to throw his helmet, flip the bird, beat his chest, etc.
A lot of reports are saying that he throttled it to swerve to avoid him at the last second. Combine lighting, bad visibility and a young driver running at his cart, I highly doubt that Stewart hit him intentionally.
Just because you can hear the throttle, doesn’t mean it was because he goosed it to hit him. The steering on these carts are totally different than a normal car, as well as the throttle set up.
Plain and simple, this kid should have stayed in his cart. That is the rule and he broke it. It’s sad, but it’s the truth and it cost him his life.
I’ve been trying to explain this exact fact to people who don’t know about these cars, but it is falling on deaf ears. Anybody who honestly believes this was an intentional hit is a bit skewed.
