Towing project car from Maine to Buffalo

Looks like I’m finally getting rid of the Mustang. Trading it for a 4WD rb20det s13 coupe. Its got an r32 skyline subframe and suspension adapted for the car. The drivetrain is from a GTS-4. The car still needs a driveshaft, front axles, wiring, and some other work.

How would you guys recommend towing it here? It’s about 9 hours away and I don’t really know anybody with a truck. I will be driving the Mustang there to drop it off, and I’m thinking about renting a Penske Moving truck with a trailer one-way. According to their website it will only cost about $260 w/unlimited mileage. Doesn’t seem too bad to me but I’m pretty broke and this is one of the only ways to get rid of this Mustang. Obviously I will spend a lot in gas, but are there any cheaper alternatives? U-Haul seems to be way more expensive and I don’t know of another way to rent a truck.

This seems like a great plan. I do not see any way that this could go poorly.

So your pretty broke, and you bought an unfinished project car that needs Tons of one off JDM/Custom parts to finish?

i dont see how this can go wrong…

LMK when your ready to newman the car in about a year and let it go cheap…

But yea… tow it one way witha trailer is teh way to go… but the 260 bux is NOT a 1 way price with the trailer

I ended up renting a truck from a rental car place and renting a u-haul car trailer when my vette broke in Florida while I was doing the AKA Rally. That was the cheapest for me but I also had to take it back to Houston asap.

Maybe ask a NYspeeder with a truck to tow it? Can the car be placed on a car dolly? If it needs axles only maybe?

This will cost way more then $300 bucks though. Think $750 plus.

Well its great to hear people who don’t know me or my knowledge/skills tell me that I will not finish a project. Viper966, fuck off. I didn’t start this thread to ask you guys about the project, just how to get it here. When I said pretty broke, I really meant “tight budget”, since I am attempting to account for what it will cost to finish it.

I should have mentioned that the car was rolling (on the GTR suspension with its “one-off parts” and the engine installed.:roll2:) The trans is off the car and only the front axles are missing, so I would think that it would be ok on a dolly. The reason I said trailer is because the difference at Penske is only $10.

In the middle of writing this post I decided to call Penske to get all of the information. When I pick up the truck and trailer in Maine I will pay $258. This includes the $9 environmental fee. There is no tax and there are no other fees. If I decide to pay with cash I have to pay a $100 deposit. I will drop off the truck and trailer in Niagara Falls within 3 days and not owe them another penny unless there is damage. If I paid with cash I will collect my $100 back. Looks like I got lucky since this is really cheap due to availability. To solidify the pricing(since it can change) I made a reservation that is free to cancel, and free to change the date. So far I’m impressed.

Cliffnotes: truck+trailer=$258

So I’ll have to calculate fuel costs. Guy on the phone said 6-10mpg. Trip is about 575 miles so 58-96 gallons. Van has a 35 gallon gasoline tank, so I’ll be filling up 2-3 times. Gas is about $3.00/gal in ME so somewhere in the ballpark of $174-$288.

Total cost: roughly $550.(this doesn’t include the drive there to drop off my car of course)

The only other problem is that the 240 is listed as being too low to tow with their equipment. The 4WD swap has made the car actually sit higher than stock, so maybe I’ll be able to get it approved. I don’t really like the idea of towing a different car than I told them, just in case anything were to happen.

I guess I may have answered my own question. Seems pretty damn good to me, but if anybody has a satisfactory alternative that is cheaper, I’d like to hear it, and that’s why I started this thread.

The only thing you can tow with from u-haul is a box truck and I’ve never seen them for less than $.99/mile, and usually things aren’t cheaper from them when it is one way. When ultradriver10000 rented a car dolly from u-haul for a one way trip it was $400, I was with him, I know this as a fact.

Good luck though.

Bring along some 2x4’s to extend the ramp length and you’ll get it on the trailer. It might take a few people to push it though since the car can’t just drive up under its own power.

Call a head and make sure you can rent the damn thing first. U-Haul won’t let me rent since I’m not 25. I don’t know if penske is the same way or not.

also i didnt know of too many uhauls that had hitches on them? or allowed you to tow.

EDIT: minus the box trucks

your forgetting tolls. NYS thruway tolls with a trailer are not insignificant these days. If your using a dolly and putting the rear wheels on the dolly and the fronts on the ground, if the axles are out of the front wheels, the front wheels might come off the car IF the axles are removed, Im not really sure how skyline bearings/hubs work but Its happened on hondas and other FWD cars from not having the axle holding the races of the wheel bearings together.

Sounds like he already cleared these things up with the rental company.

I love people who dont read all of the posts before they decide to post
i would get a trailer instead of the dolly. just make sure you have all aproppriate tether straps etc

6-10mpg sucks lol, jesus

try to hire someone locally, or find a friend

get a box truck with a loading ramp of some sort.
or build your own out of some ply wood.
then, use some ratchet straps to pull the car up.
or a winch.
that way.
car is enclosed and protected from the elements! yay.
and nobody will see your leet build inc.
you can just roll it off the truck all F&F style and people will be like dayyumm sun yo balla

Thanks guys. If I go the Penske route its all figured out and should be around $550 including gas. You only need to be 18 which is good since I’m still a few months shy of 21. I can’t see it feasibly being done for much cheaper than this since I only have to buy major gas in one direction. I’m not going to bother putting this in the classifieds but if anyone wants to do it cheaper or knows someone, shoot me a PM.

Certain states will not allow you to put the car on a 2-wheel dolly and tow it - found that out in CT. I would advise getting a trailer - besides the fact, you don’t know how well this driveline is assembled aside from pics and from what the seller told you… it would suck heavily to have the car 2.5 hours into the journey scrub a wheel or lose an axle.

it cost me $1k to use a u-haul box truck and tow dolly to binghamton and back 5 years ago…

FWD me some info about this car before you buy it. I know a lot about RBs and skylines in general and 240s… Adapting a skyline subframe to the 240 is not easy. One is mcpherson and the other is dual wishbone. I have seen a bunch of AWD conversions and they almost all suck to the point of being dangerous. Just because it’s rolling around doesn’t mean it’s good.

Don’t you have a friend or relative who can loan you a truck? You can rent a uhaul trailer for like 75 bucks. Gas will not be THAT much. This also protects your potentially shitty mustang from breaking down on the way there and really throwing a wrench in the plans…
