Toyota FT-86 / Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S *NOW TURBO*

What performance car can you get for $25k that weighs that much and putting down that good of performance?

For a “performance” car, it just doesn’t seem that great. I guess I’m biased though, I hated driving the BRZ/FRS.

My last 2 cars cost around $25k, were lighter and put down more power.

stellar review. A++ Would Read Again.

As automotive enthusiasts, we have to support the BRZ/FRS because the whole front engine/rear wheel drive/manual transmission thing is going to be gone.

I love this car because A: It was fun as hell to drive and B: it is a sports car.

I agree that the front engine/Rwd/manual trans thing is dying and needs to be preserved.

However this car does not appeal to me at all and I wouldn’t ever consider buying one.

If this thing was turbo for under 30k and maintained the weight it would be an amazing buy

The issue with the lack of power is most people don’t want to stick an aftermarket turbo kit on a factory warranted car.

Everyone else mentioned this most people won’t use this for a 100% track car so the lack of power for people who might track it once and while but love to jump on it driving around might be annoyed.

I realize its not a drag car but people are running 15s or very high 14s with it there are tons of 4 door family cars that run the same times.

lol: “When we first approached Subaru they couldn’t believe that our plans for a sports car wasn’t a four-wheel drive or a turbocharged engine. ‘Who is going to buy this car?’ they said."

Still waiting to see what 2 cars these were…since I’m pretty sure you’re going to compare the price of your 8 year old used car vs a brand new one.

I was just saying what you could get for the money. Obviously there are some benefits to buying a brand new car over a used one.

The convertible looks like crap. Eww

I’m sure everyone could make a list of “better cars that you can get for 26 grand”, but in terms of the current new car market, the BRZ is pretty darn good. Hell-- I cant even get an insurance quote for a lotus online with geico. Cant imagine its cheap. The front clamshell on an elise is 5 grand alone.

I think its safe to say that the BRZ is an amazing handling car–probably in lotus territory. Give people an excellent chassis at an affordable price, and let them go to town modding it to their performance needs. You cant fix a flawed chassis, but you CAN fix not enough power. It seems at this point that the brz drivetrain is taking the turbo’s pretty well which is good.

Hopefully these sell well enough to show the rest of the auto makers that the front engine, rwd, manual trans formula isnt dead.

Actually insurance for an Elise is pretty cheap. It was less to insure than my STi or range rover. That said the Elise is put together like crap and while it is fun to drive it’s also pretty lame. It really is a poor man’s Ferrari.

the most boring car maker in the world (Toyota) and the japanese volvo (Subaru) get together to make a heavy light car with no power and the same driving format (FR + manual trans) that Nissan (MAzda and BMW, and american cars like the mustang, vette etc. etc.) has stayed true to forever and i’m supposed to care?

i like what people are doing with it; Pat Cyr’s FRS is friggin awesome, and the fact that people are getting excited about it is cute but buy a real car for a warranty and build a Nissan / BMW or a Toyota from when they were col (MKIV Supra) and move on with your life.

This is what Pat Cyr did to the car btw:

I will admit that i’ve seen a couple that look reasonable on the street but i’ll take a lightly used G37 (if you’re a grown up) or a Genesis (if you’re almost a grown up) before a Toyota.

That’s surprising-- I expected it to be expensive seeing how easy it is to total them.

An 09 g37 goes 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and weighs 3700 pounds. How is that car even in the same conversation?

That brz you posted really is sweet. I wonder if any of it is actually functional.

OMG G37’s are the second coming of christ to the drift crowd.

I personally think these new Toyota/scion/subaru things are neat, and look forward to seeing the industry thrive on making parts for them.

Weird.
I’ve driven the hell out of a G37 and I hated it. For the price I expected a lot more.

I feel the same.

it’s just a bigger heavier 370/370… why would that make it better?

Yeah it will be Pat new DMCC car i assume. He built is as an homage to his AE86 i think based on the colour and spec.

it needs a few bucks in suspension, wheels and tires i assume, the G35 did at least.

I guess i’m just protesting the creation of a market in between a Miata and a Genesis. I didn’t know it needed to exist and since you have to add 80hp to make the car cool i’m not sure sure that the market really does exist.

Kinda like the whole BMW M2/M4 or the Porsche Cayman fitting right between the boxster and 911… but i guess Toyota had nothing cool at all and so this will just steal from miata and Hyundai instead of from all the crap they make themselves.
