Toyota Halts Sales on 8 models

And if the Volt doesn’t get it right after years of testing then they got no one else to blame.
But I still expect some intial issues, which is why they are doing the limited release to only certain cities.

The Prius brake issue is :tif:

Nothing wrong with thinning out the tree hugging hippys

And considering how slow they all drive when I’m stuck behind them I don’t think loss of brakes would be that big a deal. Don’t they all coast to stops taking a mile to go from 35 to 0 anyway? All the ones I’ve been behind do.

A Toyota spokesperson said on Thursday that Prius models sold before the end of January have this brake system design problem, but that the problem has been corrected on models sold since then, according to the Associated Press. The announcement follows Japanese and U.S. officials ordering the company yesterday to investigate around 180 claims of braking problems in the 2010 Prius.

The Prius has both a regenerative and friction braking system, and can apparently experience a short, temporary loss of braking during the transition between the two on slick or bumpy surfaces. Toyota calls it a “slight unresponsiveness” and it usually lasts under a second.

While a recall to fix the brake issue on these models has not been announced yet, it is being considered.

While I totally agree, it’s been made official:

270,000 Priuses recalled

Years of testing, but still a shorter development program than MOST other vehicles on the road today.

I saw something that GM is going to roll out and got a good laugh this afternoon.
I will post it once I see it go national.

Even Japan’s transport minister is getting in.

Japan’s transport minister Seiji Maehara has publically criticised Toyota Motor president Akio Toyoda, insisting he had responded too late to concerns over the brakes on the firm’s flag-ship Prius models.

It seems Mr Maehara is even concerned that Toyota’s tarnished image could damage both the reputation of Japanese companies and products abroad.

He is not only concerned about consumers developing a new level of scepticism about Japanese firms’ supposed superior quality, but also about how trading partners relate to each other at government level.

“Each country needs to consider how to prevent this from becoming a diplomatic problem,” Mr Maehara insists, as he gets ready to meet US ambassador John Roos to discuss Toyota’s recalls and to “exchange views on protecting free markets and strengthening Japan-US relations”.

The Prius, Prius PHEV, HS250h and Sai (a Toyota badged version of the Prius sold only in Japan) are all being recalled for the software bug fix. In total about 400,000 vehicles are involved in this recall. First- and second-generation Priuses are not included since they have a different braking system, although there are concerns that there could be performance issues with those vehicles, too.

In the same release, Toyota has also announced that it will recall about 7,300 2010 model Camry sedans to inspect a power steering hose that may sit to close to a brake hose and cause it to wear through. Official press release after the jump.

Also:

Toyota Motor Corp. faces yet another possible federal investigation, this time of the electric power steering in 2009 and 2010 Corollas.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is considering a formal investigation of alleged defects reported in the compact car, agency spokeswoman Karen Aldana said.

Automotive News found that the Corolla has been the subject of 83 power-steering complaints since April 2008, 76 of which have reported that the vehicle unexpectedly veers to the left or right at 40 miles an hour and up.

Geez when it rains it pours.

This is hilarious.

Slightly OT, but at least Toyota isn’t so alone: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35320665/ns/business-autos/

I am sure there are some old guys sitting around talking about how this is a Japanese attack on the US.
Trying to kill us in their death traps.

Only thing on the news has been Snow and toyota:

Toyota woes follow years of slipping quality
Giant automaker ramped up quickly to become world’s leader

“Toyota seems to have taken a page out of the playbook from the bad old days of the Detroit Three — when vehicles were designed and built to the lowest common denominator — and when ‘good enough’ was good enough,”

Or as I like it to call it, do your best, caulk the rest!

I think the issues is that Toyota, like the big 3 did durring the 80’s did (when their issues started) no longer manufactures cars but rather assembles them. If you look at the major recalls over the last 20 years I’d bet most have been due to a part supplied by an out side company rather than one made by the “manufacturer” themselves.

I thought pretty much all parts on a car weren’t really made by car companies themselves but by suppliers, your saying like the GM heated washer fluid recall.
