There is little cost benefit to a lithium ion battery made in China versus elsewhere, as the process is largely automated. It’s a battle of IP, and the production of the products the battery enables.
no. labour makes up a small portion of the cost of a product.
moreover, it isnt that labour is so much cheaper it is that NAFTA, TPP and others make it EVEN MORE inexpensive to produce, ship and export / import thier wares to the US and Canada.
for context, Canada has a sizeable operation at land border and at the ports to properly tax everything that comes in to Canada with the appropriate tarifs, brokerage fees etc. etc. very specifically in order to reduce benefit of buying abroad vs. buying domestically
the US does not do this.
when i order clothing from Europe for example, i dont ship it to my home in Canada… i ship it to my US PO box because the US doesnt charge the taxes, customs or brokerage fees at import.
the US treats my pants coming from Germany to NY just as if they were coming from PA to NY. By contrast when i ordered 5 axleback exhausts from TX and had them shipped to my home in Canada they convert it to CDN $ and apply the 13% HST then add a customs and brokerage fee for the service of taxing me.
That is a microcosm of the issue with what trump is saying about NAFTA (and what New Balance is saying about TPP)… essentially making it easier and less expensive for the investment class to take advantage of cheaper labour aboard rather than using the same system to equalize the total cost of import in favour of domestic labour.
I’m going out for another pair of New Balance treads this weekend.
I didn’t say labor?
yes i guess you were referring to subsidies for the car being contingent on the battery being made in china. it’s what globalists would call protectionist. China does it, Canada does it in different ways, the US does it much less so.
but it’s the same thing. im not picking on you, i know you probably already know all this anyways.
i couldnt say for sure, but i would bet that there is a whole bunch of this kind of thing in Nafta and TPP for all kinds of things…
you could use them as justification that US Company X can manage thier brand and design in the US (like Apple) but produce everything aboard… these programs (eleminating tarifs, taxes, customs fees, brokerage fees, streamining shipping routes and paperwork etc. etc.) make it easier and cheaper to outsource parts of the value chain overseas
there may also be favourable terms for US exports of agri-goods to foreign markets or for agri-biz to expand into those markets. maybe that’s how bloomberg justifies the ‘mexicans eat oreos so it’s okay for Ford to move their factories there’ article.
likely also provisions for big-pharma to off-shore production
in a way it does make US companies more competitive by taking advnatage of cheap foreign labour and tax environments… but then you can’t really complain that they dont bring their money back or create working-class jobs.
I should add to all this as well that while i’m pointing it out, i would also happily take advantage of these treaties for my own personal gain just as trump has.
Hm. The Ford situation got caught up in the election, and it could be argued either way effectively. So far, no net US job losses are occurring due to moving small car production to Mexico (MAP will produce different products), but it could be said that if the new small car plant were being built in the US there would an increase in jobs. However, GM has stated during the election that their small car production will stay in the US, but this week announced layoffs at their car plants. Beyond that, Honda chose to move Fit production to Mexico rather than the US for the latest generation, and they don’t even have the UAW increasing labor costs. It’s a messy topic.
Gave this a few days to hopefully let the shit settle. Looks like instead of screwing Bernie, she screwed the whole country, as enough of his supporters in the Rust Belt simply stayed home or voted 3rd party to make a difference. Polls assumed they’d all suck it up like I did and vote for her and they were wrong. 10m less votes than Obama 8 years ago is pathetic, especially with a larger electorate. I’m shocked at the outcome, but when you look at the big picture, when you have me considering not voting in a Presidential election, when I’ve turned up for every off-year nonsense election since I was 18, it makes sense.
I hate the Electoral College and have since my first Presidential election in 2000, I was hoping Obama and the Dem congress would do something about it in 2008-10. Not making the argument that it would have automatically been Hillary this time because she won more votes, because it’s a totally different campaign from day 1, but I’m tired of the big states not mattering. I think there were a lot more votes on the table in the cities in non-competitive states that stayed home vs. the vast empty spaces that voted for him. The vote weighting index says that my vote in CA would have mattered 600 times more in this election if I had registered 150 miles east in AZ.
The only person either of these candidates would be competitive against, is the other.
Hope Trump remembers that it’s white hillbillies and factory workers without college educations that got him elected, and they have no interest in tax cuts for the rich and the usual Republican party line. With a Republican Congress, he’s going to face a lot of pressure to suddenly become Ted Cruz. He spent a lot of years as a liberal NY democrat and I hope that hasn’t all been wiped away. He still scares the shit out of me with foreign policy.
Pathetic that this is how 4 years of the American government gets shaped.
peter thiel joins Trump transition team… letting dudes like this loose in the gov’t would be awesome imho

a really interesting point by Sam Harris at 24:42 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcmmJqRbRbQ
from: “and we have to hope that being president of the United States brings out the best in Trump…”
mulling over how a guy like trump will react after becoming the most powerful man on earth and triumphing over elites who attacked him so viciously.
where can i get a high res of this??

dear lord i love these memes
i love sending these to all my friends that are Hilary supporters. Keep them coming lol
First they petition against the electoral college and now they want Marshall law? Jesus.
LOLOLOLOL:
^^^ (ketchup bottle)
What do you think the odds are that the election will be overturned? 2.4 million people signed that BS change.org petition.
Also, odds of civil war/assassination attempts? (Not that these pussies have guns…lol)
0% chance. You think these liberal riots are ridiculous? Over turning Trump would incite a new civil war. ISIS would sit back and watch the nation implode on itself.
