“CLARENCE, N.Y. – Two Amherst residents have died following a serious crash on Transit Road involving a tractor trailer.
New York State Police have confirmed that two people, Howard Vahue, 75, and Barbara Vahue, 68, died in the wreck, which happened shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday.
Both were residents of Amherst.
2 on Your Side’s Heather Ly tells us that a tractor trailer and a van collided into a veterinary clinic on the East side of Transit Road between Casey and Muegel Road.
A number of electrical lines from Ruzzine’s Rock Bottom Restaurant were also damaged.
A preliminary investigation by New York State Police determined that the tractor trailer driven by Steven Reitz was headed South on Transit Road when the driver veered into the opposite lane, striking a van head on.
Both the driver and passenger inside the van died in the crash.
The semi then pushed the van into a nearby building. The driver of the tractor trailer and two other people inside the vet clinic were not injured.
“On a Saturday afternoon it’s a busy stretch of highway and we’re very fortunate other people were not involved or injured,” said Captain Steven Graap. “It’s very tragic there are two fatalities we are investigating now.”
A building inspector tells 2 on Your Side that most of the damage is to the front porch of the vet clinic. The clinic has a cracked foundation and drywall. Crews worked Saturday evening to safely remove the tractor trailer from the building.
Neither vehicles had direct contact with the restaurant.
The New York State Commerical Vechicle Unit will be checking the log inside the tractor trailer and look for any possible equipment failure. Police may also draw the driver’s blood to determine the cause of the crash.
