Me and the Wife were having another discussion on this two nights ago when I saw this video the first time.

The universe as far as we know is endless, you could travel in a straight line for billions of years at the speed of light and keep going. It’s kind of mind boggling to be honest, one woudl think there has to be an “end of the line” and if there was an end of the line, whats outside of that. It’s one of those things you just cant wrap your mind around.

Anyways that being the case, I cannot imagine we are the only single planet out there with life on it, what a waste of the universe if that were the case.

I had a theory once, maybe kind of dumb, but that there were planets out there just like us, inhabited with people like us going through what we have already gone through and will be going through in the future. Such as a planet that maybe not be as advanced as us, the “stone age” if you will, maybe another one thats 1,000 years ahead of us. Maybe the inhabitants of these planets are similar to us but not exactly like us, there are many ancient sculptures, writing and what not that show people quite similar to us, but with minor differences such as having 6 fingers. I can’t imagine every other lifeforms out there is just like us, maybe their are little “green men” looking things that people generally seem to believe are out there, again there are many ancient pieces out there that show creatures very similar to what we see people drawing today.

My wife brought up a good point though, IF there was “aliens” that were visting us, would they want to make contact with us? Or would they leave us alone to figure shit out for ourselves. Truth be told if “aliens” gave us their technology, chances are we would fuck ourselves up, not to mention if they just showed up one day like OH HAI, there would be MASS hysteria.

If we were aliens and visiting other planets, would we want to interfer with their lives after already knowing the history from ourselves or would we just want to idley stand by and let them figure it out?

ALso I hate to get conspiracy theorist about it, but if there are aliens visting us, does the government know, and do they talk and give them little bits to push them along in advancements that we see today?

I don’t think if anyone knows for a fact that they can just blurt it out and say OMG THERES ALIENS, they need to “ease” it onto us, otherwise a shit storm will ensue

Technically the jury is still out on the size of the universe. We can only see as far as light can travel within the time that the universe has been around. Something like 14.7 billion lightyears or something. What is beyond that is a mystery. As well as the shape of the universe itself.

There are also theories of parallel universes separated by only a thin “brane” within the 4th dimension. Which if it was true, that would mean a parallel universe would literally be right next to this one. This would help explain gravity as well as extra terrestrial life traveling here.

Because if Aliens traveled here by conventional methods (in a straight line) it would be a waste of their time if they weren’t at least in our solar system. The only method of travel that makes any type of sense would be “warp” or inter-dimensional travel via “worm holes”.

As far as Alien’s actually visiting us and observing us, I could understand that. We would take the same opportunity if we came across an unmolested primitive civilization. I would also imagine that if they had any type of higher intelligence, that their prime directive would be to not fuck with us. Because if that wasn’t there prime directive, we would all be slaves already. But who says they aren’t setting us up for the invasion?

Me too lol. I’ve seen like everything possible on the science channel. I’ve also read A Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nutshell.

Hawking has a great ability to put everything in layman’s terms. Only real reason I read his stuff. Because it’s not like he the greatest physicist out there.

Alien shit is as “religious” as i get.

Religious as in I would base some life decisions (more so how much time i spend thinking and researching) on a belief. Unless Jesus or Alien Bob slaps me in the face tonight, any thoughts or actions in and about them are belief’s, that’s it and that’s all.

never the less. Think of it this way. We as people stuffed on a planet, haven’t been out “researching” other planets with other civilizations on them. Not only that but we seem to be completely out of money, at war with each other all the time, and generally fucking up life and this planet more each day… call us behind the curve if you will.

So, if we cant handle our own shit yet, and haven’t been exploring other plants like we believe they are to us, then we are waaaay behind and off the intergalactic par for the course. All we can hope is that they dont want to fuck with us, or fuck us over. or maybe they are generous, and will at some point be like “hey guys, your shit is weak and this is why… give it a shot and if it works well maybe you can trust us and we can help you more” then not expect much in return because we dont have shit for them I bet!

I enjoy Hawking’s work as well. I remember he compared the universe to bubbles in a bathtub where the bubbles were galaxies with each containing billions of stars. So if there are billions of galaxies with each containing billions of stars then life has to be out there some where.

However space is just as difficult for other species to travel through as it is for us. Being able to harness enough power to efficiently travel through space would require technology that just boggles the mind…

Plus they say the Big Bang is still occuring so the universe is still growing and evolving.

Sometimes I like to sit there and think that maybe our entire universe is actually just part of an experiment in a particle accelerator and when we do it here, we also create infinitely small universes that burn out and die before we notice them. But to that universe, it’s just as long as we have been around. :stuck_out_tongue:

It can really drive you crazy to think about it. To us when we think about the universe and our galaxy we think of something so infinitely huge it’s hard to wrap your mind around. However, our universe could be no more than a spec underneath an organisms fingernail.

I don’t know about crazy, but I spend so much time thinking about, reading about, and watching shows about this stuff. I know there is more to us than we see. Which is what makes me think that our feeble minds can’t comprehend what is out there or how it works. Which in turn makes you wonder if there is in fact a “God” because at that scale, it’s almost too random. So large is the design that even the faithful are unable to comprehend it.

But then you also realize how pathetic the human race is. How the only true way to survive and not destroy ourselves will be the utopian society shown in Star Trek.
