I pulled out my winter car yesterday. It is a 01 Daewoo Leganza with 71K on it and all was well for about 30 miles, As i was driving home from the mall about 2 miles from home i noticed that the oil light just came on. I freaked out because ive never seen this before. Got it home turned it off and checked the oil level, added a quart and let it sit. about a hour and a half later i started it back up and the oil light was off, i thought i solved the problem and started driving, about 3 miles from home it started coming back on and by now im like wtf, i also realized that it went off as soon as the RPM’s raised alittle bit, but as the engine temp raised to normal and oil temp raised the light stayed on. i got to my friends house and noticed no noises coming from the engine bay that werent normal asked couple of my friends what they thought but came up with no real conclusion, however one said he could smell a faint oil smell, but nobody else did. The same thing happened on the way home later that night. I have no idea what to think of this. Does anyone have have any ideas as to whats going on with my engine at this point. If i left out some relevant information please let me know. I appreciate any helpful response.
UPDATE: I have found a small oil spot under the car this morning and it is right around where the oil filter is located.
Oil pressure switch leaking? You aren’t losing oil as you drive correct? My only guess could be that the oil pressure switch could be leaking, not enough to cause you to be losing lots of oil but enough to trigger the light.
Find the oil pressure switch remove it and put a mechanical gauge on it. That is assuming it isn’t leaking out of the oil pressure sender which is common.
If the light is on because the oil pump isn’t making enough pressure then yes. Is it knocking or making more noise than usual running? Only way to know for sure your oil pumps condition is to do like said above and put a mechanical gauge on to check the pressure.
I had a problem like this in my old Prelude. Oil light came on and would stay on, go off, come back on, etc. No noises being heard from the engine, but I was losing oil pressure. Being younger and not knowing (and not having money), I drove it until I spun a main bearing. Of course this was on a much higher mileage engine than yours, but I’d definitely check into it or take it into a shop if you can. I don’t know anything about Daewoo’s, so I’d say that’s the safest bet.
i havent witnessed any unussual knocking yet, and where do i put the mechanical gauge on? ive never done any of this before. Thanks for the help everyone.
You might just be better off getting it checked out. It sounds like it would be a simple fix but if you’re unsure about what you’re doing, you might as well take it somewhere to get it done. Or better yet see if someone on here is willing to do the job.
I have no idea where the switch is and i looked more closely to see where the oil was coming from and it almost looks like its coming from the top of the pan, but i honestly dont no exactly where it is coming from. ill see tuesday.
