UPS Shipping tip

So I have been complaining about UPS and their brokerage fees. I went down there today to pick up my Injen intake. So I asked the lady about the brokerage fees and duty charges that UPS decides to charge.
How it works is… if you purchase anything no matter how big or small the package is, if the person sending it to you declares that the value is $20CDN or more even if its 1 cent more they will charge you a brokerage fee and duty. What happened with my product, the guy that shipped it to me from Seattle put that the product inside was worth like $300 for the intake and $100 for the MAF. So the exchange rate at that time brought it to $502 CDN and that is what they based their brokerage fee on and wanted me to pay the $128. They guy phoned UPS after I declined the shipment and got it down to $45 for me.
So if you order from Ebay or a private deal and they use UPS, if they declare that its over $20 CDN expect to pay the brokerage fee and duty. Try to get them to declare it like $15US the most!!

Very nice lady for telling me all of this!!

I think if you declare it as a gift you can also avoid the charges and it looks a bit better then claiming that an intake is 15 bucks.

The problem is, if something happens, you would be reimbursed $15 for the item you paid a lot more for. But if the item is $40-$50 I will usually get them to mark the value lower. I usually get everything shipped USPS though.

Ya thats the thing. If it is something of value, try to get whom ever you are buying from to send USPS!! takes longer but it will be insured and arrive with NO brokerage fees.

customs is wise to the mark as gift scheme, if they see it is coming from a business they will charge customs anyways, i’ve seen it happen. I worked in a post office for 4 years.
