Equinix took over switch and data

Buffalo will never beat out the VA/NC/SC area for datacenters

Correct, the only reason I knew this was because my mom worked for Switch and Data but is now working for Equinix. Official start date for Equinix in Buffalo is Oct. 1st
Other than job creation, can someone explain how power hungry data centers are good? I feel that they may be sucking a lot more power out of the general pool which would cause the general price to go up in the area. No?
Shut up nature boy
I don’t care about the environment. I have nothing invested in this world. I just want cheap power and not some data center sucking up all of it.
Power isn’t more expensive down in VA near the datacenters…
I would think that it wouldn’t be any worse than the numerous factories that used to be up and running in the area.
the more power the power company buys from the grid the bigger the bulk discount. It SHOULD make electricity cheaper.
Fixed. Them buying in bulk does nothing but decrease supply for the average consumer.
But who cares. Take more of the power from the hydro plant and use it locally and tell NYC to go fuck itself.
bring on the datacenters
Verizon Communications may spend nearly $2 billion to build a massive data center in rural Niagara County, with at least 200 employees, according to a source familiar with the company’s inquiries locally.
Verizon estimates between 150 and 200 positions at its new data center.
Verizon has not yet established a timeframe for selecting a site, and beginning and completing construction of the new facility, according to the Business First piece. Verizon could invest up to $500 million in the data center,
there is a bit of a gap in these two articles. either way I am all for it
Buffalo, Lockport, and Niagara Falls can be the new Research Triangle.
FU North Carolina!
Bring on the $$$$$$$
Wondering what the salary range and the whole benefits package is like…
What research would be done in these datacenters?
We do actual research here, not just host apps
I wonder if Verizon datacenter people are union…

Mank you might know this…
Are there any actual engineers working for Yahoo in Buffalo? or is everyone break/fix/install?
Right now it is only break/fix/install - there should be some Subject Matter Experts being promoted in the future. Hoping I will be one of them
My fear with working for Google/Verizon/Yahoo in Buffalo would be moving up and all the engineering/design jobs being where ever corp head quarters is located
The more power bought the better the discount but it has to be ALOT of power. We currently get our power at a highly discounted rate. Northern VA as you know is the Silicon Valley of the East Coast and we currently are the states #2 power consumer so we get great discounts and participate in various programs to allow even better discounts.
JayS you are correct in stating FOR THEM, however we as a company pass that savings along to our customers. We just were able to receive multiple millions of dollars in credits from DOM and passed those millions back to our clients in credits.
Power down here is pretty cheap as is, but even with all the consumption in the area (just one of our data centers provides enough power to power an 80,000+ populated city) doesn’t cause an increase in power to the area.

Depends on the company TBH. Most of those companies have in house on site engineers for larger deployments, however I can’t say the same for the Yahoo location considering the on site management for that data center is based out of our data centers here in Northern VA.
I have this giant of fear of ending up somewhere and being bored.
BTW I hate you and VA I talked a couple recruiters down there and I could be getting paidddddd
