Have a little situation / question for some of the tech savvy follks. We are in the final stages of completing our home purchase and sale and are preparing for the move in less than a month. My wife is trying to handle all the utilities and services and the one that concerns me the most is my Verizon service. Here’s the issue.
Currently contracted with a bundle package (TV, FIOS, and phone) at our current house. I don’t want to switch providers as my email address, phone / fax, and website (at least for now) is with Verizon and all my company literature would have to be changed if I had to switch, not to mention updating all my current contacts and vendors to update contact info that has remained unchanged for near 8 years.
The current owner of the house tells me they have Time Warner and I know the coax has been run to various rooms throughout the house, mainly the living area and the bedrooms. Here’s my question. Can Verizon use the existing feed into the house for their products so I don’t have to switch to TW? My wife spoke to a Verizon rep last night and I guess in my area, they have worked out some sort of back door deal with Direct TV to have them provide TV service and Verizon would handle the phone and internet. I also don’t want to terminate my contract and get into a pissing match with Verizon on the termination fees.
In summary, all I really want is to retain my email / web addresses, and phone / fax number and have decent internet speed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
As far as the coax goes, when I had tw installed at my old place, the previous tenants had fios. When I asked the guy if he could just reuse all of the lines, he said “noooooooo” and then winked at me. Meaning- they’re not supposed to. But the installers do anyway
I would certainly agree with this but my question is from the pole to the house, or on all the poles. Each company doesn’t run their own cable (not fiber) through every neighborhood, do they?
the phone line can be ported over to tw, honestly i would get comcast everything and go with the cheapest internet plan to keep your email addresses.
whenever i talk to anyone i always suggest buying your own email or using a free service for their business, when you get comcast, vzw , timewarner email addresses its a way for them to keep you as a customer
For Email just use Yahoo/Gmail/Hotmail(outlook or whatever its called now)
You can port your phone numbers/land lines to any providers even cell providers that isn’t a issue just don’t cancel any service before you port the number off of it.
I guess what I was trying to avoid was changing all my contact info and losing touch with customers and vendors. I sort of figured I’d get trapped with the Verizon commitment, but I didn’t know better at the time. Right now I’m tied in with my fax, website, and email address.
FIOS is not available out there, which is not a surprise. When customers aren’t able to get FIOS, do the cable companies have other lines (not fiber) at the pole besides basic phone? It’s just technical naivity at this point.
Nope. Either you have fiber in the very limited places Verizon has run fiber for FIOS or you’re back to the old choices between TW coax based cable modems or Verizon’s DSL. There are the oddball setups like satellite internet but they’re really expensive and super shitty. The only people who go that route are people who can’t get cable, DSL or FIOS.
Switching to gmail was the best decision I ever made. I’ve changed service providers at least 3 times since I went to gmail and each time the switch was seamless. Get a gmail account, even set up a business one if you want, then blast it out to everyone in your contact list. Since you’re a tech n00b, please put all their addresses on the BCC line so everyone you spam doesn’t see every email address you sent to.
I would certainly agree with you on that. Just don’t know if I have the intestinal fortitude to go that route. I’m gonna have to see what they come up with and get back to everyone on this. I guess this is just one price to pay for solitude. Thanks for your help.
Wasn’t your new place in Hamburg, you may have fios as a option (go there site and plugin the address it will tell you if Fios or the older DSL are available).
And Jays and others are right move your email to gmail (either free version or Google Apps for Business which is 50 a year) also Office 365 is good option too since it gives you a business email and office access.
If DSL is the only VZ option then you are far better off with TWC.
Well, ended up switching to TW cause they were the only game in town on this street. Verizon had some options but they were all wireless and I was breaking up all the components to different subcontractors. Not thrilled to be with TW but it is what it is. Will have to change some business cards and letterhead but in the end I guess it wasn’t such a big deal. Thanks for all your help.
