You got a receipt Bing?
it doesn’t matter what i think it’s worth, it’s a milestone acquisition, it doesnt get sold.
i’m simply counterpointing your suggestion that anything other than the basic version of a watch has no value or renders it worthless. $3,000 - $8,000 watches are the middle of the market, not the top of it. And things get super weird when logic goes out the window.
His comments may have been with respect to having Rolex service or work on a watch. Any modifications are considered by Rolex to void a warranty and they often will not even work on a watch that has been modified (even if you are willing to pay the service costs). That’s why companies like Bamford and Pro Hunter offer their own warranties on brand new watches rather than what would have come from Rolex.
I’ve realized that when it comes to material things, the more expensive something is…it’s usually uglier.
The fine line between crazy and eccentric is net worth.
Victoria’s Secret makes a diamond bra worth MILLIONS. It doesn’t mean that it’s worth that to 99.99999999% of the population. Just come crazy guy with more money than brains.
So now Rolex and Breitling are trading their classic pieces for pieces that Drake and Jay-Z can rap about, it doesn’t make them nice and/or desirable to 99.9999999% of the population. For every diamond encrusted Rolex made, they sell 1,000 more classic pieces.
have you modified your BMW or Porsche?
i can’t see how either of you can reasonably make that argument. I understand what your’re saying it’s just that it shouldn’t be guys like you (us) saying it. We might as well go back to arguing about just checking the time on your iphone
There is NOTHING logical about spending 5 figures on a watch, so trying to bring logic to the argument is silly.
There is a buyer out there for everything. You just have to find them.
I don’t even own a BMW.
Going back to BigRon’s post, it was recommended that he have Rolex swap the dial, because they would not work on the watch in the future if he took it to an independent watchmaker to perform the work. In that sense, it is very different than the car analogy. If you modify your car, you may not be eligible for warranty work but the dealer will still perform an oil change. With watch manufacturers, they often refuse to perform any service on a watch once it has been “altered” by anyone other than the brand’s service center.
you used to have one
going back to Omega or Rolex for service after the warranty period has expired is just as relatively expensive as going back to the dealer for service after warranty on a european car. my BMW cost $300 for an oil change last month. Next time it needs one i’ll be taking it to the local shop that specializes in BMW that ISN’T the dealer… it will cost less than half that price for the same service.
the same goes for watches. there are tons of excellent watch techs out there that don’t work in service at the dealer. personally, i wouldnt even buy a new Rolex / Breitling / Tag at MSRP when you can get them brand new with all the paperwork grey market for half the price or better in many cases… except for Daytonas for some crazy reason
Half the price is an exaggeration. New Subs list for $8800. Comparable ones (ie - less than 5 years old) are still fetching $6k+.
Personally, if I buy a $7000+ watch, I’ll spend the extra $300 to send it to Rolex every 7 years to maintain it. You’ve never had a Rolex serviced and returned. The thing comes back BRAND NEW.
Certain watch makers, like Omega have color coded service markings. Meaning the watch has a red marking when it’s factory and never opened. Blue when it’s been serviced by Omega. If neither are there, the watch is literally worthless.
stop being silly.
I wouldn’t buy one without it. I know Sam wouldn’t.
Pretty much everyone I know who would be spending $4k on a watch, would require it.
Now, if I was in your shoes and received one as a gift, I wouldn’t care.

Red dot in question:
I bought this new, but granted, if I didn’t…I would’ve only accepted one with a red/blue dot.
you don’t speak for everyone and if by gift you mean well deserved for achievements then sure
My next Rolex will also technically be a gift.
personally i dont care what dot comes on the watch. if it saves me a couple grand i’ll take it.
It’s like carfax reports. I understand that a car in an accident was probably repaired and everything is okay, but if I’m spending $60k on a car, it’s going to be clean.
yes i understand… now can we talk about why you’re so mad?
I’m mad? I’m not mad. I have every reason in the world, not to be mad.
What Rolex is coming next?
PVD’ed Daytona with maple leaf shaped diamond encrusted face and purple croc strap.
I figure since this thread keeps getting bumped. I will post my latest purchase (omega planet ocean 45.5mm) . It was kind of a graduation gift to myself. It is my first “high end” watch. I think i made the right choice.
did not take any pictures yet but here is the stock photos from omega.

that’s a great piece.
congrats
Not a watch guy at all but saw a great watch picture on theChive’s tapiture pictures this week.
Decided to look it up even though I knew it would be out of my price range. I just didn’t realize how far out of my price range.
