A tourbillon is the single most expensive complication you can find in a watch. Although they aren’t practical any more, they are a very idea conceptually. I don’t know if one exists for under about $50k retail (possibly sub $100k for that matter) from one of the well known manufacturers.
here is a video of that tourbillion movement in action
edit. more from wikipedia on what that is:
In horology, a tourbillon (/tʊərˈbɪljən/; French: [tuʁbijɔ̃] “whirlwind”) is an addition to the mechanics of a watch escapement. Developed around 1795 by the French-Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet from an earlier idea by the English chronometer maker John Arnold, a tourbillon aims to counter the effects of gravity by mounting the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating cage, to negate the effect of gravity when the timepiece (thus the escapement) is stuck in a certain position.
Originally an attempt to improve accuracy, tourbillons are still included in some expensive modern watches as a novelty and demonstration of watchmaking virtuosity. The mechanism is usually exposed on the watch’s face to show it off.
Very solid and reliable with the ETA based movements. I got one for my dad years ago and it’s his daily wearer now. The tritium tubes are very useful for being able to see at night.
ok, so for those of use not playing in the baller watch league just yet, what are some decent options for something sub $500? I like something simple and basic. Invicta’s need not apply. Prefer black leather bands.
Looking to get into watches a bit myself. Would like a solid ~$100 daily to start since I don’t regularly wear a watch nowadays and have only worn a watch a few times in my life. Just looking to add it to my daily style. Something not overly bulky, somewhat simple, etc. Been looking at low end Citizen Eco-Drives which are appealing due to not having to worry about a battery. The other one I’ve been eyeing up is the Seiko 5 military style. I believe SNK809 is the model. I like the look but I’m wondering if 37MM would be too small. Also, I’m intrigued with the whole automatic movement. Personally more of a tinkerer at this point.
Any other thoughts or appealing watches out there in sub $200 range? I don’t need a Tissot or anything at this moment. Just want to get something that will be comfortable, look good, and not cost a whole ton.
Looks to be a discontinued unit, and I cant find anything on watchuseek. The only places I can find it from look to be sketchy vendors. I dont mind used, but I’d like to know I’m buying a real unit, not a knockoff.
Any pointers? Or do I just need to set a google alert for it?
