Watkins Glen 8/29-8/30

  1. $450 bucks

  2. Even I have passed TT Porches, new M3s, GTOs, so what? I highly doubt that it was that I was driving a better car. I was just getting from point A to point B faster than the other guy. Big flippin’ deal, not like Hendrick’s or Ferrari was calling me the next day for me to drive for them.

Thousands of people race stock prepared cars every weekend, wheel to wheel on road courses. But why? Because it is the cheapest, most intorductary level avaialbe.

  1. Auto-X = crawling, HPDE = walking, Wheel to Wheel = running. Last time I saw a newborn trying a full on sprint it fell flat on it’s face. And when it comes to steering wheels a lot of you are too wet behind the ears to make challenges at the Glen.

Thats alot of noise over there, but I could care less what you race. Either show up or dont. Or just come out to drag race, thats a much easier way to see whats what, and it lets us knuckle draggers come out to play.:smash2:

No one ever just wants to cut the shit and drive. Who cares what happens or where, just stop typing about it and start having fun with it.

SO, how did it go?

This is the first I have seen this thread.

A stock ZO6 would destroy a stock Evo at the Glen.
The Glen is all about power.
I have stated on other forums my track time at The Glen with street tires.
It would be fun to compare to a Camaro.
How did it go?

WONDERING THE SAME…

maxima would eat both alive at teh glen

The Glen went well. I really like that its not about what you drive but how you drive it. The firehawk held it’s own, unfortunatly for me at least I need a much bigger radiator. I’ll have some videos up as soon as I can get them off BadAzz’s camera.

doooo it

hey now don’t scare the noobs. you can learn the limits of your car by braking at say 700 ft. if you know you’re done braking by the 300ft marker, that just means you know your braking distance. next time, brake at 500 and try that. If you still feel you have comfortable room, try 450, 400, etc.

never driven an f bod on the track. but for those without gobs of torque, its all about entry speed, and what you can carry through a turn.

and those scared about tires -the edges will look burnt up, but a track day won’t kill your tires, unless they’re already almost dead. man up.

The instructors of the Skip Barber Racing School all say that you must learn how to properly threshold brake before you even think of moving your braking point closer to the turn-in point. It is far less dangerous this way, and there is more time to be gained by learning to brake 100% than there is by braking later.

They also say that the braking portion of racing is the least important thing to learn, and should only be worked on after you have mastered hitting your turn-in, apex and track-out points properly. If you are doing those things, you will be able to carry more speed all the way through the turn, and therefore have the highest exit speed possible. You will find full seconds of lap times in the proper line, where you will only find a couple of tenths here and there in the braking zones.

BTW, everyone should read “Going Faster! Mastering the Art of Race Driving” by the Skip Barber Racing School. It is an excellent read by a group of drivers with some serious credentials. You will learn alot, and it is much cheaper than actually taking the school. (though not nearly as effective, I’m sure… )

Bump for vids

Tires did own me this year. Last year I ran Potenza So-3’s, those stuck real good. The f-bods are pretty heavy in comparison and generally turn in late and apex late. TQ has the biggest advantage in the boot. The strangest thing I saw was one of the S4’s. Actually turning out before turning in, he would take the turn very shallow, huggin the apex and pull himself out of the turn. Eventually the S4 was overtaken, but made for a interesting couple turns.

Your right about entrance speed, for me it is in slow, out fast. Cars with less HP and TQ (like MR2’s, those little bastards) can stay on the gas the whole way on some turns no brake. Amazing those mid-engine cars. The most interesting ride was with my instructor, on some turns would actually get the car to slightly start a drift, but the interesting part is as soon as he would give a little more throttle, plant the rear end down and catapult outta the turns because at that point the car was already pointed in the right direction. Made for a Great Ride!

The cars take such a beating for those two days, but its definitly worth it, assuming nothing breaks. Unfortunatly this year, there was one BMW 318 that ended up on his roof. He got two wheels off on turn 10 and tried to correct. Big no no. I only got the aftermath, but the driver was fine, the car was not. Good thing it’s a “Driver Saftey School.”

still waiting on vids.

bahahahahaha

you know you love it

ouch, he did it on turn 10? how, that’s a pretty mellow turn, and you have a decent straight before it coming out of the boot. last time I was there I was taking it at 65 on shitty ass tires with no squeeling or anything. did he go into the wall at the track out area of the front straight? or more towards the pit lane area?

I’ll have something to say here October 3rd. I registered for the BMW GVC weekend there the 1st and 2nd. I definately need to get my SFC’s on before that weekend.
