Weld In Full length Subframe Connectors

so i have been researching suspension mods on my car for a while now deciding between one thing or the other.

but one thing i really don’t know about is subframe connectors. they will drastically stiffen up the car a lot which is what i am looking for but im just concerned about the rust

they are welded in obviously like most are, but i was mainly concerned for rust/corrosion related stuff further on down the road. i plan on having the car for a while so i don’t want to sacrifice the cleanliness of the car at all. it will never see salt or anything but i still want to keep it as clean as possible.

i have some pics of the subframe connectors in question installed on another roush for you to get an idea.

what are your opinions on rust problems or a way to prevent such a thing? obviously you can paint the outside. but what about the inside and such?

to be more clear. im worried about the car rotting/rusting out later on

and who could weld these on? and i would have to get my side exhaust remade again

thanks in advance

Use stainless?
Or galvanize the carbon steel?
Rustoleum works good too, lol.

no im worried about the car rusting not the Subframe connectors. well both but mainly the car

just put some bead lining over them and you will be fine… you could also put on some weld through primer if you are REALLY worried

Maximum Motorsports? if so they are nice i got them on my car

no i have to do spintech’s to clear my side exhaust. just as good tho

Rust always starts where metal overlaps, so the smaller the overlap the better on the subframe connectors. If you use some good weld through primer where there are overlaps and then prime and paint the bare metal after welding it should last as long as the car.

They also sell body wax that you can spray into the inside of cavities on a car to keep rust from starting, which is what alot of manufacturers do right from the factory.

Get the MM full length subframe connectors in the powder coated finish. Then grind off only where you need welded. Match up to the car where everything will be welded and as Viper said, you can get weldable primer in a can to spray in those areas. You can always stick one of those long tip things that fit into the tip of spray cans onto the primer can and just spray it anywhere it will fit and just let it pour out to make sure all the crevices are coated. Then you can spray some undercoating over everything once its dry

EDIT, just seen the part about getting spintechs.

ok i see that there are steps in preventing the rust but in your guys honest opinion would you bother if you were me or just go on without them? if you were planning on keeping a car for a while

just put some spray on beadliner over the entire area after you weld them in… or POR-15

Theres an interesting article on subframe connectors. Also shows a pic of the weldable primer mentioned.

I would do what I can on mine…

lol i just got done reading that

I had these on my mustang make sure you cover them up good or they will be a rusty nightmare!

Don’t use SS, because when bonded to carbon steel it will cause galvanic corrosion which will rust whether coated or not. I wouldn’t worry about long term rust, even if you do drive it in the salt, especially if you coat it when you’re done. I’d use boxed in sealed connectors then coat them with some epoxy primer when you’re done (Rustoleum is good). Finish it off with some rubberized undercoating or a good thick epoxy paint.

who on here would be a prime candidate to weld these in, or any good recommendations?

then a good epoxy primer once the welding is done. Give J&J a call about welding these on.

I just put new front floors in the jeep spot welding then seamsealing. after that was done I used POR-15 and bedliner on the inside and then por-15 on the undercarriage. looks nice now but I am interested in seeing what it looks like after winter. I highly doubt you drive that car in the winter so I would just use the POR-15.

The only problem with POR-15 is the $$$$$ but everyone says it is the best and you wouldn’t need that much for what you are doing

New Era would be able to weld them in if your willing to make the trip to Rochester.

Edit: NVM the UMI SFC’s I found were for foxbodies…

i can only use spintech subframe connectors because of my side exhaust, which im not getting rid of

I had Vic’s in Hamburg weld mine in, BuickGN suggested them. They did a good job.

Subframe connectors are right up there with my very favorite modifications. Different car afterwards.
