What does a OBD-I inspection entail?

I need a comprehensive list of everything they check for on a OBD-I NYS inspection.

 thanks guys

they make sure ur cat is there…and safety…tierods…ball-joints…lights…tires…horn…ebrake…brakes…rearview mirror…full exhaust…windsheild cracks…seatbelts

now what if 3 calipers are awesome and one caliper is kinda…weak sauce.

i take it, that it would fail :frowning:

nah i doubt it, unless you go to some tight ass place youll be alright. the more laid back places look at tires, look to see if your rotors and pads are worn out, lights, windshield, exhaust, thats about it. if you fail just go somewhere else til you pass

well all three brakes are almost brand new with pads, except for one. and the rotor is pretty pitted.

everything else should be fine.

you’ll be alright then. if you run into too much trouble for some reason shoot me a PM

goto a place like valvoline where they just check ur pads…when i wnet there i put my snows on andthey didnt even pull the wheel to check the brakes…oh yea wiper blades count too…i goto Niagra Falls BLVD one

I just passed mine 2 days ago, no driver side chest seatbelt, no parking brake, cat leak, pads about 1/3 left, tires questionable(should rotate before winter), tachometer dash light out, but then again I knew a guy and it is a 95 so still OBD I. You should be fine but best bet is if you know someone with hookups.

The valvoine on Sheridan drive between Millersport and Sweethome tried to make me buy new wiperblades to pass. The inspection only requires you to have “functional” blades. Just because they look bad doesn’t mean you have to replace them. I told him to show me where it says I need them replaced - he came back a few minutes later with the book and said he couldn’t find it, but he recommended it. Yeah - like I am going to pay them $15 for wiper blades…

15 a piece or 15 total…good ones cost 15 a piece…which i know they dont use

inspection shops are all required to pull one front wheel to check the brakes. wheather they actually do or not, im not sure. This also means that if you go to a more comercial shop, they can and will probably pull all the wheels off to look for broken/worn out parts that they can make $$ on.

The saftey standards of the NY inspection are kinda strange, and some seem rather pointless when they could be checking more important things. Pulling one wheel IMO is not a thourogh saftey check, especailly when ive seen cars that have missing brake componets on one or two wheels and the rest are basically fine. Good to know NYS is looking out for its faithful tax over-payers

seat belts gas cap, horn light. ebrake no leaky fluids no carck in windshield more then 3 inches. no holes in headlights or tail lights. brakes to fai lpractically have to be metal to metal. also tierods arnt part of inspection but they can fail u if they find it to be a safety issue

wtf why didn’t you ask me… we’ll take it to my friends shop tommorow if you want.

also techs like to test drive vehicles see which way the car pulls under braking to figure out which wheel to look at.

Valvoline on Broadway and Dick made me buy new ones too over the summer. The only thing wrong with them was the winter blade cloth stuff ontop of the blades were ripped. Ugh.
