What got you into riding?

Browsing through my old posts on another forum I bumped into my own response from a few years ago, when I still had my grey focus… kinda wierd reading something you wrote yourself and forgot about…made me smile.

SO, I thought it would be cool to see how some of you local folks got your interest in two-wheeled transportation…

I blame Will.

I would say BMX naturally paved the way for it

then to further perpetuate it i was given the standard ultimatum from my mother when i told her i was planning on buying my first bike (1980 XS650) when i was 17

she told me there would be no such scenario allowed under her roof sooooooooo i bought it anyway and became a founding father of “the ritz” that summer with CTN and his brother AJN

I think it was due to me growing up riding my bmx everywhere. I started out with a Haro Revo Mag when I was young and that was my main form of transportation living in the country. I would bike to school, work, football games, I rode it everywhere. I think that evolved into me wanting a motorcycle. That only lasted for a while though, as I grew out of the motorcycle phase and bought a house, a nicer car and met my gf. I hope to get back into it in the future, but it seems that things always get in the way of trying to get back into it again. I guess I might just have too many hobbies/things going on at the moment to entertain the idea of it.

don’t talk to ME about too many hobbies, Man. LOL

it’s interesting to hear that bicycles/bmx evolved into motorcycle passion…I mean, I too was into bmx when I was younger…but I think my dad was a major influence, esp bringing home that little honda50 I still love and miss (sold it when I was about 14 or 15 for $100)

I liked bicycles. I wanted one with a motor. Bought one that goes in dirt. Broke it a few times, bought one that goes on the road, broke a few of those too.

Haha you have one hobby that you have too much of. That is me and fish tanks. My gf is freaking out cuz I am redoing my 55 gallon tank because it sprung a leak and I have like 4 tanks in my living room for all my plants and fish.

I’d have to say it started off with BMX as well at a young age. I then visited my brother in Italy who was buck wild with anything that had wheels and a motor. Had a little taste out there what “freedom” felt like ripping around and not giving a fuck. Came back home and got an RM80, Always “looked up” (ha) to my fathers 198x GPZ 1100? followed by an enduro he had for many years. My brother then moved to the states when he was 16 and purchased an RM250 and I upgraded to an RM125 even though I couldn’t touch the ground(bit me in the ass a few times) and went from there. Had many friends in high school and right out of high school pass away causing me not to buy a sport bike even though I’d use my buddies R6 from time to time over summer. Last year bought and messed with my XS650 which I hated and now onto a CB550 which I’ll probably hate as well.

I thought bikes were pretty cool as a kid. I don’t know exactly what made them stand out, perhaps the exhaust tones that I loved from high revving sport bikes. Anyways, I remember at about 7 years old thinking I’d have to ride some day. Then I turned 16, got my license, learned to drive stick and just became more interested in cars. 5 years later, out of the blue, one of my friends shows up to my house on a Ninja 250. I said I had to get a ride :gay2: and I was hooked. I then asked him to show me how to ride it and after a couple trips through my front lawn (for fear of laying it down), I was comfortable with the throttle, brakes, and clutch, and proceeded to buzz around the block (in my sandals no less!). After those 5 minutes or so, the feeling was back and I knew I had to get a bike. Ended up buying BOBBYG’s GS500 that Fall, rode it the following summer, then upgraded the following year to my old 636. Haven’t been on 2 wheels since, but once my life settles back down again, I hope to be back in the saddle.

I lived in NT till I was 11, we had our small bike crew that rode everywhere. Moved to holland and by 12 I had my own honda 200s atc, by 14 I had my first snowmobile. From then on ive rode or owned pretty much every quad, trike, and dirt bike. Wasn’t long till I got on the road. Now I just have a sled and two quads. I went through the car modding stage but I have so much more enjoyment with my toys. I now just buy cars and drive them.

My friend had a minibike as a kid, then I wanted one, then I wanted a dirtbike, then I got a streetbike for free, then I got out of it, then back into it. I’m sure I’ll think bikes are stupid and cars are great at some point in the future, but you know what? I like what I like.

Nothing yet. I enjoy the ability to chew my food and the freedom to go places that a mouth powered wheelchair can’t.

My bike’s air cooled, which means there is no water pump to fail. Too soon?

HA.

I’d challenge you to a fight, but you’d probably have a family dinner. <3

Majority of my Uncles on my mothers side are crusty harley bikers and bike drag racers. Growing up around that influence got me into Harleys and trouble. I worked at my Uncle’s shop for years while going to school. We worked on pretty much all of the Rare Breed and Outlaws bikes. Our family never belonged to a club. Just friends with all of them. My fathers cousin is Sonny Barger.

As a kid I had mini bikes, then got into cars, then started riding.

It was only natural. Riding saved my life.

reading this kind of struck something…

Made me wonder what type of trouble I’d have gotten myself into as a young punk had I not been a gearhead instead of something else… I often feel like I almost wish I wasn’t such a gearhead because maybe life would be easier…but then again, maybe I’d just be some fuck-up that got into some bad shit or something crazy.

I guess I owe you a thank-you, because now when I’m swearing at how much a PITA some of my projects are, I can think to myself that it’s better than being hooked on drugs or alcohol LOL.

The key is, you need to be hooked on alcohol AND projects.

Or atleast enjoy the two together.

But not over .05
