There are STIs in the 9s but they go through engines like they do tires.
It really is tho. Just because there are not many in the area does not mean they are not out there. a 35r + supporting mods gets you there. A fp green or red + supporting mods gets you there. gt30’s get there… Hell there is a stock vf39 that ran an 11.2.
Its not hard to get there.
As i said aove its not hard to get there… but money is another thing lol. I find that most people on the boards who have high hp STis all seem to have shitty wheel+tire combos. Im sure inntune again would be the one to ask on this one.
If you’re fond of the car, DD it. If you really want that 10’s goal, get another platform. STi sounds like a great Buffalo daily.
You could get a Duster, Nova, Maverick, Fox body, 4G F-bod, etc. for a third of what you could sell the Impreza for. In fact, you could pick up a pre-set drag chassis for dirt cheap - these things are in AutoTrader all the time - “$18K invested, sacrifice at $6k” :roflpicard:
If you need a 35r to get into the low 12’s high 11’s, then something is wrong. The car that went 11.2 with the VF39 was gutted and completely setup to do just the quarter. Thats like saying gtp’s go 11.4 because john did it. The others that aren’t’ set up go mid 12’s.
The main reason its tough to go fast is the extra shift (4th tops out at 100 mph).
and 5th gear sucks.
I was making a point… after all, it will be a TRACK CAR. Gutting would be one step closer to saving money.
I actually did some tests with the STi. I don’t remember the exact numbers, I think my rev limit was set to 7500. That doesn’t matter, anyways, I picked up between 2 and 3 tenths by revving it to the full rev limit (slightly under of course) vs. short shifting by 500 rpm. I wanted to see if the stock turbo could still make power up top, and it could.
I rev the Evo out to 8k and it pulls strong all the way to 8k too. Revs are nice
Wow, I have trouble believing that without cams.
Keep sti as a dd and get this NOW…

It doesn’t seem like shifting that high would be worth it because TQ drops off so fast (turbo is tiny)
this is my dyno with 3" turbo back, drop in filter and protune:
297/332 at 19psi with 93 oct.
Or buy mine for 12.5k Goes 11.90’s babying the transmission, and is still on the baby turbo. Imagine having a 35r on it or larger
You don’t need torque once you are moving. As long as the car is still making power, its better to run out the gear than to waste time shifting. Plus, the longer you stay in the gear, your gear ratio is better, not to mention lag is a bitch.
All depends on the setup, but with mine (mods mentioned on previous page) it was dead nuts true.

I like to use the 50% rule. If you add more than 50% of the original power you will start having trouble. A perfect example is that you can see STi’s in the 400 whp range all day long with few problems. (380 WHP + est 450 motor; stock is 300bhp). Evo’s are good to the same range before transmissions explode.
I think you could get into the 10’s or at least low 11’s reliably with a 30R, and some forged pistons. This is of course given you can drive the car.
All that said, I think you should keep the STi the way it is, and get a cheap car to drag race.
I don’t think you can consider “easily” to include “forged pistons”
 If you want a cheap drag racing car buy a LS1 F-body…5k car…5k in mods run 10s all day…
I still don’t understand why people turn 25-30k cars into drag cars then spend a ton of time broken.
If its so cheap to run 10s with an LS1 car whats with all the local money pits? :gotme:
nm i get it all day for 1 day until something breaks. Cougarspeed’s car excluded.
Because everyone else wants to be cool…with turbos, superchargers, bling wheels, full interior…
Then they get scared to put proper slicks/suspension on their car.
QFT.
Cougarspeed is no longer local
