What would cause this? (mild turbo carnage)

The other day I go to start my car and its smoking a bit… I let it sit for 5 mins hoping its the condensation in the exhaust that’s been known to produce “smoke” before…

I drive down to the local convenience store and drive back(500 yards), still smoking. Idle in my driveway again, and its starting to fill up my street… No bueno. Shut it down, pull the turbo off and pull the exh housing off to check for oil within there and find the chunks falling off the CHRA as in the attached image.

Thoughts?

I’ve already sent it back for warranty, and I was told it shouldn’t be an issue getting it replaced, but I’d like to know the initial cause. Exh housing bolts weren’t He-Man’d on or anything. They came off with moderate ease…

looks fine to me

maybe the exhaust housing was installed slightly cocked or slightly out of round or somthing, but maybe thats just far fetched. it might have just been fatigued. Looks like a regular T3 or T3/T4 centersection, if you need another, pm me, i might just have one laying around…

Thermal fatigue.

What brand turbo is that?

Mehhh… Ive seen worse:mamoru:

It’s a Bullseye s362. The exh housing itself seems to be a stainless steel of sort, while the center section seems to be of a mild variety.

well of course you’ve seen worse, but I was wondering what the issue was so I can keep it from happening again.

It’s unlikely that it is stainless, unless it’s inconel (unlikely), maybe it’s coated.

How are your EGTs? Are you running any antilag or launch control?

It could be as simple as shit metal. Is bullseye a good brand? Do they make their own stuff?

It may very well be coated, on initial startup from new the housing turned a lighter color, once it warmed up… not really sure what that means haha.

Bullseye is a borgwarner based turbo, made by a company in Michigan. My friend Joe from tempest racing has been running them on all the hondas that come out of his shop, most in the 9-10 second range and hasn’t had an issue yet. I called him about it and he says mine is the first he’s ever had to send back for warranty work.

Also on their forums there is no note of this happening to anyone else.

Yes I use launch control when at the track, but no other time, and no antilag.
