The most incorrect statement you’ve made so far. the NA motors were 2JZ-GE and the TT’s were 2JZ-GTE. Different internals and heads, yes. But 2JZ is a family of engines, not just the ‘2JZ no shit’. It’s almost like someone saying "oh sweet, that Civic has a B18 in it.’
this was my exact point…sorry I didnt get the exact name of the engines correct…I was stating that a NA 2jz and the TT 2JZ are not nearly the same besides the Block itself.
soooo say its the most incorrect statement, yet in reality, I just got the actual engine names confused.
If you’re not trying to spend a lot of money, I’d say forget about getting a MKIV Supra TT and modding it…
I’d been sweating one for a long long time… Back in '99 I test drove a couple- one automatic, one 6 spd.
The 6 spd one was a '94, with like 70k on the clock, and I think he wanted like 27 or 28k for it (at the time). I was in no position to buy (nor am I now) then but wanted one bad.
Today, 8 years later, the same vehicle with maybe 80-90k miles would probably still fetch 23k-24k. Totally not worth it for me, I still love the car but would rather spend that money on something else, but that’s just me.
If you like the idea of the 2JZ, and are mechanically inclined (which you seem to be) and looking for a project, I have the following ideas:
Buy a MA70 (MKIII) Supra for about $4,000- set aside $10k to get a nice 2JZ-GTE and another few thousand for the buildup. You can have a pretty bad a$$ car, lots of HP, and something rare. The swap is tough I read, but not impossible. Due to the infamous blown head gasket on the 7M-GTE engines, you may be able to find a MKIII turbo with a case of it for like $1500 bucks with a nice body. That leaves you a lot to play with for your engine/turbo/driveline/brakes/suspension.
If you want to try something just as rare and maybe a bit less costly- get the MA70 and go for the 1JZ-GTE swap. This is the 2.5L twin turbo six that came with some later versions of the 3rd Gen Supra (chassis code was JZA70 I believe). I think it has a slightly smaller stroke and a bit less torque, but people have built them to 600+ HP no problem. Plus with upgraded interals and valvetrain you can spin these to like 9K RPM. The swap should be cheaper and so should the engine, though it was never really sold in the US. I think market demand (and Fast & Frustrated) totally jacked up market prices for the 2JZ-GTE but the 1JZ-GTE isn’t as affected.
Buy a MKIV Supra NA with a 5 spd for no more than $10K. Suprastore.com and I think even F-Max sold turbo kits for it in the $4k-$5k range back in the day… Or you can buy your own pieces and make a pretty nice setup. Don’t know if it would hold 500+ whp without work to the 2JZ-GE (N/A version). I’m no expert but you should research heavily. As others have pointed out, the suspension, brakes, and tranny are all not as heavy duty as the one on the bad boy TT version. The 6 spd Getrag has been known to be reliable even at high HP levels- I doubt the 5 spd is all that. So this option may be costly in the long run if you want big HP as you will need to fortify your trans (and the rest of the driveline).
In any case, the above would be what I would consider if I had $20K to play with and wanted a high HP Supra.
Theirs just something about a 3rd gen supra that really attracts me…i have been talking about possibly getting one for nearly a year now. It would be cool to drop a 2JZ into a different car and make it a rocket, however…thats not what kind of plans I have. I like the whole 3rd gen TT supra to begin with…and honestly, dumping a shit load of money into it over a coarse of a few years doesnt bother/scare me one bit…as far as my mechanic abilities…I know ALOT and im still learning Alot…as all of us are. I Built the whole turbo kit on my camaro, with home tools and trial and error…started out not knowing much about them…and learning about them so much that I know my car like i know the palm of my hand…Hell, I created 4 different style turbo kits, before I finally created/ found the one that I was looking for…incase your wondering why i made the kit…well, they dont make one for our 98-02 3.8 camaros (ya, its shitty)
as far as Modding the Supra would go…I would just get a TT last gen supra…and convert it to a nice, single turbo (like the one on my car, turbonetics T72)…boost it to 20psi (which It can handle on a stock motor) and call it a day…not looking to make a street legal death trap…but a car I can bring to a car show, and perform like it should…600whp is very reasonable on a stock 2JZ…and that would be my goal.
-17500 for the car
-T72 turbo
-and what if the motor is at the point where its ready to explode, but not showing anything to give u a warning, (ask sean about that)
-And what about insurance… kiss that good buy with one ticket of anything… there not stupid… u have a supra… its like owning a lambo and saying its automatic to state farm or whoever…
-When u buy it u better make sure to tell them u got it for 500 or something unless u take out a loan then your screwed b/c sales tax is 8% on whatever u buy. for registration
My friend derek just got a 97 TT 6spd, for 29K last september, from canada, he searched for 3 years before he finally found “the one”. 89K driven only on weekends and what not. he happened to drive by there house coming home from hardrock cafe’ and it was on there front lawn. they didnt advistise it.
Just keep looking. there 3-6 around here gen 3. ask one of those guys when they show up at the meets, or in lake geoge
I think you mean 4th Gen rather than 3rd Gen right… But if you insist on that route, I really am skeptical as to putting together a 500-600whp single turboed MKIV for under $30K, after buying the car… You may luck out and find a 6 spd MKIV already converted to single turbo for upper $20s, they exist but be ready to buy since they go quick. If you are open to going automatic you might be able to find one for $2-$3k less, but I guess you’d need to make sure the auto tranny has been modified somewhat to handle the power. :stfu :stfu
all the JZ’s are the same family, but I believe the only major thing that is the same between the 2JZ-GTE and the 2JZ-GE is the block itself… the manifolds arent even interchangable, different head, internals, etc.
