We are planning to do some magazine advertising. What magazines do you subscribe to or read most often?

Modified seems to address a lot of the particular topics I care to read about.
My buddy advertised there a while and said he was happy with the results.
+1 for Modified Mag but you might consider looking into PAS since it’s a Canadian magazine. They do a lot of promo at the local events and might net you more local business in the long run…besides the fact that it’d be cheaper than some of the U.S. mags.

PAS is cheap a subscription and is getting big. Most visual material is body work focused.
i find PAS to not hit the target market well enough. A great deal of it is audio and trucks and that type of thing where as other publications split their markets into distinct mags.
If you are going to put an add in a magazine you should try to find one that will only hit the people you want to hit.
Pasmag may have a higher distribution and readership but if 20% are truck guys and 30% are audio guys then you can only really consider 50% of the stats anyways.
Modified would have a more focused readership… no truck guys and very few audio guys plus some of their employees are on SON so you might have someone to approach on a less-professional basis at first to discuss things.
as far as reading the mags, i used to buy the Modified’s all the time but i stopped, unless i was in it. I usually pick up TURBO after seeing a few issues filled with straight-up balls to the wall skylines, NSX’s, and nothing else… no stupid DIY $2000 turbo set ups, no “mount your own tires” bullshit. just fast as fuck cars and tips for people who want things done right not trying to fuck up their own cars…i;m not saying modified does that but isnt there some DIY magazine out there now for people who wont spend $100 on a new tire but apparently will be willing to spend $6 on a mag?
The people you would be trying to attract are not the DIY’s anyways.

modified and hpi
i enjoy reading the import tuner articles and the way the mag is laied out but modified has been putting nicer/more functional cars imho
super street is an excellent publication. i’ve been reading it for years now and it never gets old: funny writing, good tech/product sections, nice feature articles, etc.
modified mag is also pretty good.
i had a pas subscription before, thought it was complete garbage: shitty and dull writing, sub-par feature articles, so on.
i’ve been reading modified mag exclusively. the editorials by RJ DeVera and Tarzan Yamada have been very informative. plus the cars are badass!

What are your goals with advertising? Are you looking to sell product, promote your company, etc?
Ads are expensive as hell in major magazines and for a small business, its usually money being thrown away for the first year simply to promote your name…well I shouldnt say thrown away but you get what Im saying.
