Really, REALLY glad we won’t get the worst of this… but it seems as if there are still gonna be some big nasty annoying bugs around these parts.
The bugs emerge en masse when the springtime soil temperature reaches 64 degrees Fahrenheit
It’s fair to say it’s starting, but it’s still in the very early stages. It certainly isn’t going all crazy. … When it really happens, it’s not going to be like this. It’s going to be shovel loads of cicadas.
Insects are expected to emerge by the billions on the East Coast, across an area stretching from North Carolina to Connecticut. This army of bugs, known as Brood II, spends 17 years feeding on plant roots underground. Sometime between late April and early June, depending on the weather, the insects burrow out of the ground as nymphs. The juveniles shed their outer skins, crawl up trees or buildings, and fly around to find their mates. The females lay their eggs, and then the adults die in droves. All this happens in the course of four to six weeks.
When it comes, a cicada emergence can fill the skies with flying bugs, and fill the ears with a hum as loud as a jet engine or lawn mower. Those who have been through the full-frontal buzz say the experience can be disconcerting if you’re not prepared for it.

As gross as it is its still pretty fascinating. I kinda wanna see a swarm lol.
last time this happened, it sucked big time.
Jesus, look up “cicada killer”… Its a massive bee that looks like a humming bird… Fucks those cicadas up… Lol
Millions/square mile with the brood II cicada in the heaviest locations.
I have two really big/old trees that are in a 5ft square patch of dirt on either side of my apartment steps… they already play host to an array of other disgusting creatures like house centipedes and tree spiders… I really fear what sort of cicada evil is lurking beneath the dirt there.
Looking at maps it shouldn’t be too crazy here as we’re on the upper limits of the “swarm” but places in NJ/CT/PA etc… Should see some crazy amounts of them.
And FUCK house centipedes. When I worked at the DMV warehouse they had tons of them. One of the few bugs that really give me the willies.
There was a leaky wall last year in my house that went unchecked all winter… come spring time they were literally crawling out from the baseboards… I FLIPPED out and my landlord repaired the damage…
Only saw one so far this year and it was tiny, so I’m REALLY hoping I don’t have to deal with that again. :ahh
