I think it would really depend how bad the rust is. Do you really want to be driving a car that has an 1" rust hole in the frame? Most lights and brakes are what is tested.
You need a “Safety Inspection” when you go to open a new insurance policy on a car that is ten years old. Those inspections aren’t too bad, they check the frame, tires, bushings, shocks, springs, and holes in the exhaust, windshield, tires, brakes.
You need an “Out of Province Inspection” when you bring a car into Alberta from another province or country. They check pretty much the exact same things, but are stricter.
Other than that there are no mandatory inspections, and there are no mandatory emmisions tests in Alberta yet, that I know of.(there are talks about bringing it in.) The OOP probally won’t let you get away without the emmisions stuff though, but if you aren’t moving to another province you won’t need that Inspection.
Your best bet is the bring it to a fame or body shop and ask them to look at it and tell you how bad it actually is. But any deep rust on the frame should be repair ASAP, it costs more if you wait too.
no u need a sefty inspection if u getting insurance on any car 12years of age or older1994 -…
if the car is 10-12 years of age 1996 -98 u don’t need safety inspection unless u getting full coverage.
and no inspection is needed on veh 9 years of age or younger.
but different insurer may have different policies… the 12 years of age or older inspection is goverment mandated so everyone insurer will request it.
rust wise how lazy are u haha ??? if u willing to work , get sheet metal and decent welder
start grinding away and welding in new metal … grind down the welds again and use seam sealer or fiber glass on them than get ur bottom rust proofed, endercoated or clean up ur bottom really well with pressure washer on a lift and use ashphalt coating spray
we did it on my friends startlet … takes some time depending on amount ofrust.
but use commom sense if car has more than 30% rust underneeth its gonnabe PITA and u better of scooping a new car.
What type of inspection are you talking about? If it’s an OOP inspection, I believe you have to have an exhaust on it, not just a downpipe. I checked into this with one of the mechanics at my work. As for the rust, get your torch and welder. If your gona get rid of it, do it right and get rid of it all. You don’t want it to come back and haunt you later. Good luck.
OOP the car must have a cat, and as for the safety inspection, it is 10 years not 12, if u have not had a policy on that car with that company u need the inspection. u cant get away from it. wenever ure opening a new policy on a car 10 years or older u need the inspection, call any insurance company and they will say the same. It is the law in alberta.
As for any rust, dont wait and dont cheap out. ITs the structure of the car. get it done professionaly, trust me its worth the cash.
check ur facts before posting em…its 12 years of age and has been that way since last summer … i don’t need to call insurance company to check I work for 1.
um 3 insurace compnaies i talked to said otherwise, but hey ure the expert im just goin by what ive been told by the insurance companies, which one do u work for? because allstate, td, and ama say 10. if it got changed to 12 when the reforms came in thats cool. 10 is silly if u ask me. Most companies still dont have their shit together regarding those reforms anyway.
AMA… it got changed to manditory for any veh 12 years of age or older last july…aug , before there was none , only if u wanted more than plpd on veh over 10 years of age u had to get safety. but for plpd only you could insure veh of any yeras of age without any safety.
I don’t think its lame at all, so many people cheap out onkeeping basic shiet maintained on their cars …and 12 years is quiet reasonable …of course sure there is ppl who just know mechanics that will get inspection sign ed…and sure there is cars that are only 2-3 years old and in alot more fucked up shape than eary 1990 s and below .but every day i see those safety inspections and 80% of the time there is shiet wrong with cars … no brakes left, major oil leaks , no turn signals working etc…do u want a guy with big ass oil leak to park in front of ur house one day? or a guy with 10% brake padding leftbe driving behind ur car especially in past few days etc.as well gives people an idea of condition their car is in, becouse most of the time those are recently purchased cars.
ones that already insured from before on ur policy don’t need safety.
just my 2c

I agree with you on this, and sorry for arguing all this time. I concede that you are right, ive never just put plpd on my cars so thats why i didnt know about the 12yr part. I actually think it should be 8 years or 150000km, but thats me. My other vehicles cost me like 500 in parts to make them road worthy. But my 180 didnt need anything… I didnt even know the mechanic but he was slack on it anyway.
