EXACTLY! Once I started getting up in the am and the thermostat said the house was in the low 60s; combined with my 2 year old son actually covering himself up with a blanket… I knew it was time!
NOTE - We’ve “programmed” my son since he was born with minimal bedding, I think I’ve seen him under a blanket maybe 10 times in his life when I’ve gotten him up in the morning. We set his internal thermostat so he doesn’t need blankets/heavy onsies, etc. So when he’s under the covers, it’s COLD in the house.
Programmable thermostat is the ONLY way to go in my mind. Why would anyone not have one?
LOL
So where I’m renting, the place has a gravity heater. If I kick it on, the apartment never goes below 60º even with stat all the way down.
If I commit to that, combined with a day of direct sun on the place, it could be 75º+ in the place when I come home from work. Not too comfortable for a dog that has to sit in it all day.
i’ve had mine on for a bit now…but it is radiant floor so it takes a while to get all the floors up to temperature and balance things out with the basement…it only runs at like 90 degree water with a brand new 97.5% boiler… sure beats the old $4000/year oil boiler
I don’t know why everyone doesn’t have a programmable thermostat, they’re like $20 now which should pay for itself in a month.
Turned the heat on for a bit last night. Typically when it’s programmed it’s mid-60’s when we’re around and 55 during the day when we’re not and nights. What really sucks about our house is there are no heat runs upstairs and keeping the house that cool prevents any heat from rising. I’m debating biting the bullet and running some 220 upstairs to put some electric baseboard heaters in the rooms we use.
Why not run ducts up there? Is there anywhere to get a feed and return into the attic space? Combine that with a damper/damper controller and thermostat and you can effectively add a second zone to your house.
With it being an older house there really isn’t any “good” place to run it up. I would basically have to frame in the ducting somewhere. It’s an idea and probably will happen somewhere down the line but it’s just not really practical now. I think going electric would be easier and more cost effective for a fair amount of time still.
I was looking at something like this for my cabin.
http://www.eheat.com/
Nice find! They’re affordable, don’t draw many amps (can probably put a few on the same circuit) and don’t look like shit.
One of the rooms I have to heat is the soon to be nursery (wife is due Jan. 4) and I was worried about safety when the kid starts to walk around so cool to the touch is awesome.
Those look decent. My cabin only has a wood burner and in the cool months sometimes i don’t want to run it. These would be nice for the 3 bedrooms.
Yeah, you can set them up as plug-in, hardwired with independent onboard thermostats, or wire up to 3 in a series and connect to a thermostat. It’s great for a situation where you might only need spot heating, and the cost is pretty cheap compared to the alternatives.
I have the same situation. I’ve been using a kerosene space heater when not using the woodstove. I thought it would be too cold in the bedrooms, so that’s when I started looking into these, but It’s not that bad so we decided against it for now.
IIRC, they also have an option for a dial up remote. If you have phone service at your cabin, you could call ahead in the winter to turn the heat on.
I turned my heat on a few days ago when I woke up and it was in the 40s in my house. :]
Yeah, heats going on when I get home.
I could see my breath this morning.
Lol, nah I just dont care what it costs. I would rather be warm then worry about my gas bill.
Oh I know. I feel the same way. This thread just made me think of this.

Heat was on this morning at work and I just noticed it switched over to AC this afternoon. To many poorly insulated windows on this side of the building and when that sun starts hitting them it’s like a greenhouse.
I don’t even care about the cost of heating the house. But I like to try and tough it out as long as possible. I should add that until the heat was on all my windows were open.
Was not on, because my wife is insane
It will be on tonight
I don’t know how people wait so long, I turned mine on well over a month ago. I was freezing and realized my dumb ass left it at 62 for a month, so I cranked it. My bedroom is the coldest room in the house. I had $500/month propane bills for 3 years even set really low, so gas is cheap for me.
