Soo I’ve been driving my truck alot lately and a few weeks ago i was at a traffic light in drive, foot on the brake… after like 20 seconds the truck shut off… i started it and it started right back up and i drove away… a couple weeks later did the same thing… The other day I had to drop a shitload of old eclipse parts in ft edward about 45 minutes away, made it no problem until i was done… was at a traffic light like before and truck shuts off in drive… This time i tried to turn it back on it the fucker wouldnt start… waited 10 minutes, still wouldnt fucking start… towed it to my buddys shop up there and after about an hour tried to start it and the fucker started right up…
I can hear fuel pump on when i turn the key so i know its not that
my buddy thinks its the ECM, but a quick search on forums shows it being a ton of diff shit, none of which were the ecm.
Trying to diagnose an intermitent electrical problem like that is very difficult. When you say it wouldn’t start is that a crank no start or a no start/no crank?
Body lift or suspension lift? I would start by checking all the grounds. I’ve seen plenty of issues on body lifted trucks that creep up months or years after the lift is installed from incorrectly relocated or reinstalled grounds.
If your going to clean up any of the grounds pick up some dielectric grease at the parts store and apply it to the lug, bolt and chassis after you clean them.
This is what I was getting at. I had almost the same identical issue in my 2000 5.9L where it would just randomly die. I picked out a dry day, started it then took a water bottle and sprayed the distributor, wires, etc and it shut off. Wouldn’t start back up again until it dried.
Crank no start means either fuel system or ignition system. Since your pump works then check for spark at the wires. If no spark check for power to the distributor. If u get power to the distributor then u know its your distributor.
Another issue I had with mine (but the symptoms were different) was the IAC valve. Basically it would stall when the RPMs went down… but that doesn’t seem to be your issue… just figured I’d put it out there as an option.
john has hit on my #1 guesses being cam/crank sensor or battery, however it could also be choking out from a clogged cat converter (assuming it still has them) if the cat is partially clogged the heat will expand the honeycomb in the cat and choke it out and not want to start until the cat has cooled as well. any check engine lights?
