I had no idea this existed, and if you have time to look into it it’s quite interesting:
Willets Point is very primitive in appearance, as it has no sidewalks or sewers as of 2013; due to the area’s geography and the lack of paved roads in the area, flooding is common during heavy rains. The area is very industrial and is filled with auto repair shops, scrap yards, waste processing sites, and similar small businesses. It has been described as being “post-apocalyptic” in appearance. A Hunter College study found that Willets Point was a “unique regional destination” for auto parts and repairs.
Basically you pull in and all sorts of people come up to you asking what you need done to your car. Then they do it for cheap.
The “Valley of Ashes” described in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby is said to have been inspired by Willets Point
There was an independent movie filmed there: Chop Shop (2007) - IMDb
This place probably won’t exist much longer. Good read on Jalopnik: Why Did Mechanics In New York's Worst Neighborhood Go On Hunger Strike?
