Is this a useful piece of software?

According to microsoft it is only available to large licensers. I got a copy of it on torrentz.com

Im gonna install it tonight on a 500mhz pc, im wondering if this is gonna be alright to make an old computer run well.

Anyone have any actual experience with it? shed some light

what are the system requirements / recommended system requirements and what do you need the system to do?

  • A minimum of 611 MB of free hard drive space. Actual requirements will vary based on your system configuration and the applications and features you choose to install. Installing all optional components requires 1151 MB of disk space. These requirements are reported on the screen as you select options in the Setup wizard. Additional hard disk space may be required if you are installing over a network. Also, you should reserve additional space for future updates and service packs.
    • A computer with 233 megahertz or higher processor clock speed (300 MHz is recommended); Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor is recommended.
    • 64 MB of RAM. 256 MB of RAM is recommended.

i need it for internet, email, and other basic shit. i dont enjoy waiting 20 mins for a window to show up on the screen

i use win2k right now and it runs videos on vlc alright so im thinking i can watch movies too.

windows web site makes it sound like it shouldnt be used for anything useful really, but i think its just a bullshit line so that m$ can keep it on the dl

experiment box… play around with like freebsd or something … fuck xp on that machine

its installing now. we’ll see how it goes.

i have enough time to experiment using a decently powerful linux distro on my laptop w/dual bot

no need to fuck around with useless stuff, just want things to be easy on the pos.

when i upgrade it, i will likely go with kubuntu

If the machine has 128MB or more of RAM Xp will work just fine on that machine, though it will take awhile to boot.

Just don’t expect to do much more than word processing/spreadsheets or simple server apps on it.

Win2k would be your best bet due to memory usage I had it running on my old celeron 300 server with 256MB or ram for the longest time. Running two instances of a custom game server app. And a rousing game of Transport Tycoon. Worked quite well.

Where as my dual p3-550 setup took about 7 minutes to boot, but ran fine upon booting.
