It is just a start but as of last weekend I officially started my High Peaks 46ers challenge. I was curious if anyone else has been working on this and how far along they are.
This past weekend I went camping at Wilmington Notch next to Whiteface Mountain. We woke up at 5:45am Saturday, got on the Connery Pond trail at 7am, made it to the top of Whiteface at about 12:30pm, hung around the top for about a half hour/hour then started our descent. We got back to the car around 5:45. A grand total of roughly 14 miles with about a total of 3,210 vertical feet climbed. One hell of a time and one amazing day of great weather.
This photo shows the pond about .3 miles in where we started. You can see Whiteface in the background which we hiked to.
After the Connery pond you hike about 3 miles to Whiteface Landing which is at Lake Placid/West Lake. The water is clearer than can be.
From there you start an up hill towards the Lean-to. From the lean-to it is about 2 miles which gets steeper and steeper.
On the way up you can see Lake Placid
Got to the top.
The lake in the photo is where the first photo was taken and about where we started.
And a photo from the ski resort which is next to our camping site.
In September I will be going with my brother to hike Algonquin, Wright, and Iroquois. Hoping to pick another date this summer to get another 1 or 2 in as well to jump start the 46 needed.
Who else is working on this? How many have you done and which did you enjoy?
Bring A LOT of water and don’t trust the resources on maps. It’s crazy dry that time of year. I had a close call hiking porcupine creek a couple years ago in September.
I really would like to go out west with my GF and show her the mountains. I have not been able to experience them in the summer/fall months but they were incredible in the winter. I’m definitely jealous of your Yosemite trip.
There are TONS of awesome spots out here…A few weeks ago the GF and I hiked to the summit of Mt. Cuyamaca which is about 40min east of her place. It’s 6512ft above sea level and a pretty decent day hike.
I’ve done Whiteface, Marcy, Algonquin, Skylight, Colden and a few others that I’d have to look at a map to remember exactly. It’s an accomplishment to do them all but it wasn’t terribly interesting to me.
Do you still have to find the log books and the USGS markers or have the rules changed with technology?
after this picture was taken, we hiked up to the crater, which is just over 10k feet elevation… kind of a butthole puckering event…as it’s all glacier, and we didn’t have any ice gear.
Lots of crevasses & steam vents that lead down into very hot water or oblivion.
Come out West, it’s a sight to see getting above the tree line.
Unfortunately the gondola is about 500ft shy of the peak, unless you hiked the last amount to reach the top. haha
I need to find a job out in the mountains, there is a lot of fun activities.

It kind of sounds like they go by your word now. I’ll end up finding the markers I need and take photos either way. http://adk46er.org/how-to-join.html
This is something i have wanted to do, but just haven’t had time to get out there, and none of my friends have been interested. Might have to look into it again.
Were the trails marked pretty good, or did you have a GPS?
Isn’t it nuts? I had family out here plus job prospects and did not realize how hot the housing market is. I have been out here for 2 years. Are you right in Denver?
Yeah I can’t believe what people are paying in rent, everything is a “luxury apartment” in this city it seems haha. I live on the Englewood/Littleton border, super glad we bought a house a little while ago.
