Wrapping old dash in fiberglass questions

hey guys, i wanna wrap my dash in fiberglass, paint it black, and possibly add a couple small guages to keep on top of things.

you guys know where i can buy the resin, fiberglass mats, and other stuff i might need? i’m thinking home depot, or possibly CT. you guys know for sure??

thanks in advance

I got mine from CT for all my projects, they should have everything you need.

If I may:

  1. You’re going to need a LOT of fiberglass. A LOT. This stuff is terribly messy and likely to get everywhere. Get gloves, and mask off everything you don’t want to get fiberglass on. Get some big plastic garbage bags and cover your seats, the carpet, the windshield everything you got.
  2. Scuff up your dash first and use a surface prep cleaner (check the automotive paint aisle at CT) if you really want the fiberglass to stick there forever.
  3. Use the minimum amount of hardner (don’t hot mix).

Are you planning on painting it a gloss black? Flat black? Textured?
I am curious to see how this would turn out and I wouldn’t mind helping you out. I’ll be home after the 28th and I think I’ll need directions to get to your house again … been a while!

wow you plan to do this while the dash is in the car?

good luck with that. take the extra 30 min and remove the dash.

Yeah on second thought that will save you way more time. Espically with painting / sanding.

i actually just picked up a nice CT dremel, comes w/this snake like attachment that acts like a pen/dremel. its sweet, only $30!!!

anyway, i have a spare blown dash in my basement, and one in my ride. i’m talking to a guy right now that is doing his. he said he peeled off all the vinyl, laid down a resin, and is covering it in fiberglass, sand, paint and finish.

i was thinking of either a gloss black, or a metal pearl graphite (like my ride). don’t wanna stand out too much, its really just an excuse to use my new dremel, and to see what i come up with. was thinking of adding some gauges in the passenger department (volts, oil pressure, maybe water temp?). not sure how that would look w/the oem ones though…

i’m all open to suggestions, colors and techniques, materials, so on. if u guys wanna get your hands dirty, i’ll let you know when i begin. i’ve never worked with fiberglass, so i’m glad i have a spare dash.

i was gonna say. take it out the car… theres no way you would do a clean job if it was in the car.

garunteed resin on the windshield lol

good luck id be interested to see the finish product.

I still don’t get why you need a dremel but anyway …

Yeah let us know when you start !

thats gonna be one hell of a mess if its done in the car :?

i’ll use the dremel to cut holes, and sand intricate places.

I HAVE A SPARE DASH IN MY BASEMENT, WHICH I WILL BE WORKING ON

^^^if that wasn’t clear the first time i said it.

was thinking of doing my center console over too, and making a custom shift boot holder (i have a spare center arm rest thing too).

Bob, u are such a homo, but thats not new news to any of us…

anyway, i ripped of all the vinyl, and started filling in the dash w/fiberglass filler. its gonna take a while, btu hopefully it will be worth it.

for people who have ripped out there dash… how much does this thing weigh??

if it weight a lot… could you just make a dash outta fiberglass and scrap the old one?? and while you do that you could make custom holes/pods for guages… now thats worth atleast 2 points on the BLING factor… 4 points if you know how to lay CF!

Nice, definately keep us updated, a friend of mine is trying to do the same to his dash, but I am not too sure how well his project is going.

hey guys, i’ve layed down the fiberglass, but haven’t done a whole lot yet, the weather was cold, i was kinda busy, and i sleep away most nice weekend afternoons due to my drinking binges! :stuck_out_tongue:

so, i’m gonna try and put some gauges in, mainly the amp/volts and oil pressure (think every car should have the gauges stock anyway. once i start sanding, i’ll post my results. the fiberglass dried up, but still seems kinda weak, not as strong as the can claims (i may have also not used enough hardener). anyway, this job is all on trial and error.

zipzip, the dash wieghs about 15 pounds (my guess at least, maybe a little more). if u want to get lippy with your smart ass bling bling remarks, then i suggest u stay out of this post. i’m not doing this for show, my freakin air bags blew, and i am try to find a cheaper alternative to shelling out $1000 to nissan for a new cover. do something for this club, instead of adding pointless played out remarks, and it might get u somewhere, otherwise get the fuck off this forum, no one would miss u…

Yo guy your dash is going to be mad jdm bling…

Kidding, but honestly if your fiberglass feels weak, use more hardener.

i dont know if you searched or not or came across my old post, but take a look at this fiverglass job if you havent yet, pretty sweet shit if you ask me, take your time dont rush and your results will be that much sweeter!!
good luck ill be waiting for pictures when youre done.

hey, thanks for the link, i must have missed that post. but there wasn’t a whole lot of tips on procedure. i’m actually pouring the bonda-glass stuff right over my dash (minus the vinyl). anyway, i might let the dash get some rays, and see how it hardens from there. still saving up for guages, i got a long list of repairs on my ride, so the dash is truly a side thing. i’m in no rush, and doba, did u build a dash?

Are you just pouring straing resin on the dash? If you used some fiberglass mat with pure resin it’s going to be 100X stronger then that (or then using the things with little tiny bits of the fiberglass mat chopped in)

NO i didnt end up building the entire dash up of fiberglass but shortly i will be doing pieces such as side panels, glove box, and whatever else i see needs doing. we’ll see
good luck with yours though
and yes the sun does help in hardening well actually it needs to be over 15 deg to harden properly, or just mix in lots of hardener.

Hardener does not make it stronger, in fact, it makes it weaker. You should try to use the recommended amount, or a bit more. For places where strength is not of much concern you can put more in to get it to kick quick, but the part is weaker.

i used some stuff called bond oglass or some ish like that, blue can. it claims to be hard as steel, but i am still a little concerned about strength. just got a corner sander and some good rubber gloves, i’ll let u guys know how it comes along (i am going to put body filler over the bondo before paint).
