Penn Hills man dies in motorcycle wreck
Falls 75 feet after crashing over railing
Monday, May 16, 2005
By Brian David, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A 26-year-old Penn Hills man died instantly yesterday when he crashed his motorcycle and fell an estimated 75 feet onto the shoulder of a North Shore road.
According to Pittsburgh police, Edward Campbell and a friend were out riding about 5:45 p.m. when Campbell lost control on the climbing, curving ramp which leads from the southbound lanes of Route 28 to the Veterans Bridge.
His motorcycle hit the barrier alongside the ramp deck and Campbell flew off the bike and over the edge of the roadway, hitting one of the railroad bridge supports before landing on the concrete barrier beside General Robinson Street. His motorcycle remained above on the ramp.
Campbell was wearing a helmet.
Pittsburgh Police Sgt. Stephen Matakovich said he did not know how fast Campbell was going, but said an accident reconstruction team was going to investigate. He said police were interviewing Campbell’s riding companion.
Matakovich described the motorcycle as a “Honda sports bike” which had been extensively customized, with aftermarket bodywork.
“The fairings are all different and everything. You can’t even tell it’s a Honda until you check the license plate,” he said.
The motorcycle is similar to those used by riders who have brought a rash of complaints this spring, with motorists calling police to report them doing stunts and weaving through traffic at high speeds.
Monday night police apprehended eight bikers for dangerous riding on the Parkway West.
