WTBorrow: M10x1.25 Tap For Titanium..

I put this in Gen Auto because it involved my knob. :wiggle:

I have a Titanium shift knob that I want to tap deeper,
and all we have at the shop is High Speed Steel taps,
hence, I need a higher grade tap to tap this about 0.200"
deeper.

Anyone have a higher grade tap I can borrow for a day?

Order it for work.

why do you need a higher grade tap? Just use a 4 flute and thread a little bit at a time and back it out… this prevents galling. Other then that… you will be fine.

is this the mammoth chunk of titanium I gave you?.. you’re going to reduce it down to a shiftknob? I have some smaller diameter pieces… if you want less to machine down. Titanium is sexy, and i know your knob will be to

the reccomended rake angle for Titanium is 5°-10° and steel is 5°-12°… so your steel taps are within spec.

EDIT:

A little more info then you need… but i’ll provide it anyway

Titanium has a low specific heat and tends to wed onto the tool material, so oxide coated taps are recommended. The reason why I recommend a 4 flute tap is to minimize the contact between the work and the tap… limiting galling. With this, a higher grade tap isn’t needed, just a coated tap, which you are likely using anyway.

I thought about doing that, but the cheapest that I could find for a one time only tap was about $40, and someone might get alittle curious as to why we ordered it.

As for you LAFENFAG, I tried using a 4 flute HHS stap this morning, and I was able to cut in very small increments, but when I was backing the tap out, it was chattering like 9 year old girl. I was honestly afraid tha I was going to break the tap in the hole.

I also tries using a TON of oil in the hole to make it alittle easier, but it only reduced the chatter to a 12 year old girl.

As for the Mammoth chunk, because of the features already machined into it, it really wasn’t all that large of a piece. Also, it has already been made into my shift knob, :wiggle: and it is :pimp: as all get out.

BTW, we have coated taps, but by Murphy’s law, we don’t have one in M10x1.25…

So, maybe I should chage the title to WTBorrow: Coated M10x1.25 BOTTOM tap.

When it is all said and done, want to polish my knob Josh?

i worked at a machine shop that my gf’s dad owns…and i broke a lot of shit.

i’m not a fan of polishing, thanks though. I’ll brush it for you though, like i brush my teeth.

the machine shop i work for works primarily with titanium. i dont know how soon you need it but i can look around at work tonight and see if we have what you need. ill post back later.

only i can polish ur knob the right way

If you can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. I could pick it up from wherever you are. I will probably use it over the weekend, and return in to you by Monday.

Like I said, I only want to borrow it just to tap one hole deeper.

Josh, if you brush by knob, wouldn’t that lead to chaffing?

sorry man no luck. i just checked thru our inventory and we dont have anything that big. good luck finding one

wont some alcohol instead of oil work better?
