It seems pretty simple to me. You fire a shot at a cop, they usually return fire on you. A pirate fires a shot or takes a ship/people hostage, our Navy blows your ass out of the water.
It’s not that easy to tell who the pirates are. They don’t exactly wear eye-patches and fly the Jolly Roger anymore…
Im impressed they shot 3 guys and didnt injure the hostage. I wish i could see a video of how it went down.

Despite what has been done in the past few years, the US military is not a private security force for various multinational corporations.
Ya the Navy can not protect and run escorts to all our merchant ships. It would be the same of asking the marines in Iraq to protect your transportation company there.
I just am entertained that now Somalia and shit is saying how we were out of line and how they will make sure the US regrets this. They take an American ship and hold the captain at gunpoint for 5 days and try to get ransom money and are now pissed that we shot and killed their pirates who are just terrorists.
Personally, if this becomes a larger problem, merchant ships need to have laws lifted and allow them to be armed. I am sure a 50 cal strapped to the front and armed guards onboard ships will do a lot more at preventing this.
