Yet another tire question…
I now have some 17x7 wheels and I am looking for tires. I need some kick ass traction and directional stability, and a local shop to install them that:
- knows how to protect a rim from damage while installing tires.
- knows how not to hang wheel weights on the rim lip to balance the tires.
- can balance a tire for well over 150 MPH (so I never actually hit the disturbance if there is one).
- is willing to spend time rotating the tire around and re-seating the bead to avoid as putting any weights/very little weight if possible.
Anyone know a shop that/will can deal with my anal-retentive requests? I don’t give a crap what it costs, it’s gotta be “right”.
I’ve read about the balls you put inside the tires for a “dynamic” balance rather than a static one. I’m not sure how precise they are. They are more commonly used for tractor trailers and large off-road tires.
Your rims are probably very true, but I would go to a place with a force balancer, just to be sure.
Most any shop with a newer tire mounting machine won’t do any damage to them, however you should ask whether or not they cover the damage they do. I highly doubt anyone local will be able to balance to 150mph. I mean come one, by the time you hit that speed in the Civic, tire vibration is going the be the last thing you’re worrying about, like maybe the the car taking off???
A couple of years ago I had NTB (yeah I know…) mount some sticky rubber on my 17x7.5’s brand new out of the box. Long story short, they scratched on pretty badly, needless to say I shit a brick. They replaced it…which took a while…then put it on backwards…then dmaged the new rim again when they took it off. After all this they spent TWICE the price I paid for the set and couldn’t charge me for the mounting. Had my balls not been in a wad, I should have made them pay me for travel/lunch and a brew. Fuckers.
