z32 pcv valves?

Ok so I’m posting this up for a friend. He bought a beautiful twin turbo Z yesterday. To start, I should mention a couple points. The seller would not let anyone test drive the vehicle, which is fair, lots of people don’t want test drivers. Then, when on the test drive, my friend asked the seller to spool up the turbos a bit. the seller claimed 400hp, and of course a potential buyer would want to feel those horses. the seller would only take the car up to 4000revs, just enough to release the bovs when he let off. My friend bought the car, and babied it the whole time. When he got onto the highway, he decided to open it up a little bit. nothing too exciting, revved it to a max of 5000. once he slowed down and went to take off again, the car stalled. He pulled over, and smoke started bellowing from underneath the hood (keep in mind, this was after owning the vehicle for a mere 3hours). engine light went on, huge mess of oil all over the side of the car and in the engine bay. He called the seller, and the seller claims it had to be the pcv valves, which he also claimed to have replaced under 1000kms ago. So what we’re thinking is the seller had the car sealed up good enough that nothing would blow apart or spring a leak as long as not too much pressure was put on the motor. My question is, does this problem sound like it would be the pcv valves? I understand this is a normal 300zx issue, but if our worst nightmares are true, then the pressure built up enough to blow pretty much every gasket (there are oil leaks everywhere, but it was all dry before this incident). Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.

Definitely just got ripped right the fuck off by the sounds of it you threw a rod through the block ha.

X2, you definitely have a lemon. I’d be heading back to the seller and saying “WTF!!”

PCV valves would not leak oil like that.

Your friend bought a Z32 without a mechanical inspection? No offense, but is he an idiot??

Don’t get me wrong, the Twin Turbo Z is a great car. I’ve owned mine for 11 years. But it’s definitely not a car you want to just buy on a whim, with no research and not covering your bases.

PCV valves will only cause you grief in two scenarios:

  1. If you are running your car on a TRACK (autox or road course), a high-g corner can cause some oil to puke into the plenum which will cause some smoking out your exhaust (momentarily) until that oil is burned off.
  2. If the PCVs get stuck in the closed position, it could cause the dipstick to blow out. However this is not a common occurance and should not happen with relatively new PCVs.

Easy way to check, pull your pcv’s and see if you can blow air through them, it should only go one way. From the sounds of it though, I think you have much bigger problems to worry about.

your friend is an absolute moron…who buys a car…let alone a 15+ year old car without test driving it through every gear…throughout the rpm range. Anyway could be time for new turbos.
